The quality has not changed... you tastes have improved

I know my taste has improved, but I still think Tiesto did a good job with Magik 1-5 and ISOS 1-3 (3 being the weakest, one bing alright, 2 being awesome). Plus, some of his older Forbidden Paradise/Lost Treasures mix cds are pretty interesting and I don't see anything mainstream about those (Forbidden Paradise/Lost Treasures that is).
Ferry, can't say I've really heard too many of his older sets to properly critique those (Armin was good back in the day, but not great). Ferry did remix/produce some great tracks though. Nowadays I don't care much for any of their work (especially Tiesto).
Nick Warren is in a class of his own in my opinion, and I can't say that about many DJs. I'm not too familiar with his productions though (except Way Out West ofcourse). But I'm not always in a mood for deep/progressive stuff. I still like having some good uplifting trance to listen to aswell (or something a little less deep with more melody, but preferably a rawer sound), and it's most stuff from the older days. It all depends on my mood really. Although, I'm moving further away from most Trance nowadays and listening to more Nick Warren/Sasha.
Oakey is still the DJ I by far have the most respect for (based on his work in the past, not the present). He's had several different styles and mixed some of the best sets ever. I wish we could have the old Oakey back , and by old I don't mean him not changing his style and growing as an artist, but rather, not remixing/mixing crap like Justin Timberlake and Madonna .

Another thing, I think Oakey's old sets had all the elements a good Trance (with some other EMD) should have an original style, melodic, hard, euphoric, uplifting, and even deep sometimes. And most importantly, no cheese!

ON the Progressive tip...
I think Nick is more forward thinking than Ferry... To me Ferry is bubble gum electronic... Meaning you can take your little sister or someone else who might not have been exposed to much electronic to a Ferry show... Nick is a bit more edgey and plays a little harder... think of him as a beer. When you move to Sasha... a little more refined and harder. Then you get to guys like Digweed, Howells and James Holden types who simply don't fuck around. Especially John. The man plays tough house fuckin tripped out techy stuff (given, if you are in the right venue and city... as that is the key with John)
As your tastes become more refined and you get older... you might listen to the more techno based stuff like Swayzak and M.A.N.D.Y.... maybe Luciano, Ritchie Hawtin... Burridge. I'm not big on Desyn.
You start looking out for the exciting talent coming in off the peripheral edges of electronic. That is where its AT.. IMO |
every thing in this post is better than i could of ever put it from the standpoint of progressive....it is simple to see that the ones moving forward, henceforth the "progressive bread" of djs, as to aformentioned are key...the rest as lance so elequontly put are playign bubbleum...and to the topic, nick warren is one of the best, as well as jody, as well as many others, mentioned above, at this and are great guys to boot as being able to speak with them some at wmc...true definition of the progressive style!

You guys have to Remember that ATB, Ferry , Tiesto, and Paul Oakenfold were the Dj's that we all started listening to when first started listing to EDM ..so i give them so much respect .... You have to understand they are in the Top 10 because they have style that the average person can listen .....if really havnt been introduced to EDM...i had some Guys and girls who came to the Ferry show who mostly listen to Hip/Hop and top 40 and when they saw Ferry they were amazed on the energy at the show...something caught there attention they were asking were can i buy a cd of this guy ...and the next few weeks they came to the Hernan show ....but.. if it was a real Progressive dj say like Danny Howells...i believe it wouldnt of had the same affect on them.... they wouldnt understand just the beats and sounds ... the vocals do draw them to the dance floor and thats why the Trance djs do have the bigger audience...so trance and house are the gate way for most ppl to get into the many styles of EDM .. well thats my 2 cents |
Yeah, they are what I consider farm DJs or feeder DJs... meaning that their music is accessible to the mainstream. They are vital to the electronic scene in the sense that they bring new heads in. Then, your tastes become different. Sure Natual Light was good when I was in high shcool... But now I drink premium vodka and good wine. So it goes with music. Keep in mind, someone has to turn you on to the deeper shit. If no one is there to introduce you to the good stuff... you'll prob stick with what you know.
Would I consider Tiesto, Oakey of Ferry "forward thinking" DJs? NO. They do have a purpose. I was never into any of those guys. I was into Kimbal Collins, Icey and Chemical Bros (when I started going out in Orlando in 1993)... As soon as I heard Sasha and John play one night at Firestone.... I was done listening to those guys, My friends were Oakey fans... Playing Trance with a big "T", I was into Sasha and John playing trance with a little "t"... u get me?
Forward thinking music from the edge.... Pushing forward... I said it once, I'll say it again... "Progressive" is not a style of music, its the state of mind of the DJing playing it.

ps. Joseph gave me my 1st gigs in Austin 7 years ago.... that is forward thinking.
See you at proton sessions on Sat 4.22 (shots for the TAs)
