You have to understand the fact that the Confederate flag is synonymous with slavery and racism. Sure, the South might have a great culture and whatnot (I live in Georgia, and I can agree partially, but I came from up North). You couldn't just walk onto any online forum, brandish a Nazi flag saying it represents the greatest period in German history because of the awesome wienerschnitzel made in that time, the good music, and the overall apathetic discourse of the populous, and expect everyone to just say "Man, he is like, soooo not racist loll0rx". |
Big, big difference.
The south supported slavery at a time when it was (unfortunately) not universally hated, the image of the confederate flag also is not banned (unlike the swastika), and is still used in southern state flags. The confederate flag now represents the south as a whole, and it's culture (unlike anything to do with Nazi Germany).
The nazi flag represented Hitler's awful crimes, and even though back in those days the world was not quite as accepting as it is now they were still very much disgusting crimes even for the period.
The American civil war was not only about slavery, infact the link with slavery has been built up to something it wasn't. Many in the north at the time supported slavery and many in the south did not.
This has nothing to do with slavery, racism or anything like that. and if people are offended by one person liking the flag and what it stands for surely they should be much more offended that it's still in use as a state flag?
