I knew about the stereo separation knob on the mixer, but didn't know that was how you get it to be a mono signal. I've tried sidekick and I couldn't get it to work. I could see the signal on the vu meter, but no sound. I put a sidekick on the bass channel and on the kick channel and made sure that they were using the same virtual channel, but to no avail!

Any ideas?

Thanks for the responses! I thought of the duplication idea but I haven't tried it yet.

Edit: Nope, I didn't think it would work. Maybe Ableton just isn't capable of this.

Easy as hell to do in Ableton.

Just add an Impulse and give it a kick sample and a simple four four pattern. Route the output of this channel over to whatever channel you have your sidechain compressor hooked up to. This new Impulse will now be the trigger for the sidechain compressor, so there's no dependancy on your actual kick. You can create some really cool lead sounds this way.

And don't select any virtual channel on kick's sidekick, just use it to send the audio to another channel, which you select on bass's sidekick.

You could also try using some other compressors that don't color the sound as much or not having the ratio on your compressor so high - it's all about playing around with the sound.

If your cpu has enough power you could always just make a copy of that synth and kick and do the same again but with the other way around and viola you should have stereo.
For some its probably not feasable but its worth a try.

Try doing it with a gate effect instead.
"mgTriggerGate" is a good one:

If you're a newbie, start out with FL Studio or Reason. Not pro. software.

Don't what you meant to say, but forgot to mention that FL actually has some neat features that make it easy to SIDECHAIN as this effect is called.
Reason has some features for this too, but it's a bit more complicated.
