Well actually here in Montreal at least, at some places the light is green for both sides and then it turns red for one side and flashing green for the other. so its actually after traffic going straight is released.

Hmmm, I have never encountered that.

Might just be a difference between Ontario and Quebec.

Yup, we have that here in Ontario. At least in my city we do.
