What I don't understand is, why do so many Americans have such a strong dislike for anything "cheesy" or "Euro", and only prefer deeper, progressive stuff?

You would think that something being "cheesy", like Ian van Dahl or DJ Sammy, would appeal to a wide audience and surely pack the dancefloors. You may not be a fan of this music, but you'd sort of agree that it has mass appeal.

Yet, I have never seen that to be the case in the US. Crowds in the US only prefer to dance to Tiesto, PvD, and Armin. Cascada is the only exception to this -- Americans tolerate "Everytime we touch" and dance to it, but they are completely unaware of any other songs in this style, since no Euro artists really make it here. Why?

Some of you know may have heard about DJ Dean, who compiles cheesy mixes called "Tunnel Trance Force." But when he released a CD called "Tunnel America", he chose a completely different tracklist, with Blank&Jones, Tiesto, and ATB.

Most of us don't really like "the masses" and bitch about overcrowded dance floors.

I'm sure this event will do really well, just not with people on this board.

Big Mike is right, though, I do have Castles in the Sky on my HD. It's just on the computer that I never use anymore, therefore have no incentive to delete.

Yeah, that was a famous track, but Cascada and Alice Deejay and this are just about the only "Euro-cheese-trance" that Americans know about. Maybe DJ Sammy - Heaven.

Meanwhile, in Germany, tracks like this are released by the dozen every month, and they are actually played in clubs and people dance to them.

Can you see Americans dancing to a mix in this style? I'm not talking about dropping the occasional Cascada or IvD to spice up a Top40 or r&b mix. I'm talking about actually dancing to a lot of these tracks with a hard bass and cheesy melodies.

Is there some difference in mentality or culture that affects this?

Americans listen to American made cheese, like Britney Spears.

I have been involved in Trance for about 5 years. From my experience of going to various events and parties, the only places where "Euro-cheese" can attract a crowd are the Polish/Russian suburbs of Chicago and Toronto.

Anywhere else, and especially so in the US, packed dancefloors only occur at a Paul van Dyk or Tiesto or Armin event.

now that's a plausible answer. I'll buy that. But why don't they like Euro cheese? Does it seem foreign to them?

If you're going to listen to cheese, you're probably not willing to look very far. As a result, most people in America just listen to what's jammed down their throats by MTV and radio. Since those mediums don't support Euro cheese, there's no exposure. I'm sure a lot of it would take off with people who listen to American cheese, it's just not that accessible.
