Seriously, socialism and communism can work, and work well. Maybe not here where people fear it and know next to nothing about it, but still..

In principle it is a ridiculous law, it just reeks of small measures taken to eek a few more tax dollars from people. And if you're running a business whose major form of distribution is a garage sale, well ya gotta wonder how well the business really does.

actually I was trying to take a shot at how Jay views everyone that is not a member of the CPC.... looks like I missed.

edit.... I disagree... communism cannot work under present technological and sociallogical conditions as the lack of a government or motivated self interest to direct the flow of resources would result in inefficiencies and/or scarcities that would degrade the standard of living beyond tolerable levels propting a return to capitalism or modified capitalism.

Seriously, not everything preposed by a politition (other then harper... you like him right?) is an aweful invasion on your freedom. You need to look at things a little deeper, there are very good reasons for limiting this type of activity.... some of which have been mentioned.

agreed

and they're not trying to stop people from having REAL garage sales..which if you ask me, are good for the community. just one aspect of civil society and u can actually start talking to you neighbours. shocking, i know!!!!

ps. i love garagesaling. i'm such the stereotypical cheap dutchie with 3 cheap dutch sisters and a cheap dutch best friend

garagesaling with them is on the short list of things that can make me get up at 6.30am on a saturday

i miss burlington

What's the substantial difference between a "garage sale" and a "home based retail store"?

Neighbours... are they the people that live near me that I pretend not to see when passing by while walking the dog?

I don't think you are legally allowed to have a home based Retail store. It's usually a violation of zoning. You may run a home based business but it should not be bringing in extra traffic. I had a best friend in grade 7 and 8 whos dad got busted having a staff of 6 working at his house and they shut him down for more or less the reason that it was bringing in extra traffic into a residential neighbourhood. I think once you have built a business up to the point where you have consistent costumers you should move it into a commericial or mixed zoning district. Now if it's all online sales or something that doesn't bring in flocks of customers, I beleive that is a different issue and within the limits. I have also seen cases where calls come into the house but the costumers don't and that seems to be within the guidlines as well.

I could be slightly wrong on the home retail thing but this is my understanding of it legally.

besides, they are eye sores half the time, face it if you don't want it that means its the most useless or ugly crap you have, I'm not a big fan of seeing on peoples lawns every weekend. I compare to my place in Louisiana where my next door neighbour has a rusted out bus on his front lawn just because he can. Why would he pay to have it towed and thrown out if he can just pull a for sale sign on it and hope someone 20 years from now will want a rust covered gutted bus.

I hate having my Canadian neighbours flyer my house every single weekend... yeah I know you're having a garage sale, you've had one every week for your arts and crafts crap all summer long and your punk kid tries to sell me over priced craptastic lemonade every weekend too.

Hoooray for entrepreneurship!
They need to learn how to make a real business model.

Oh no! the horror! Someone actually doing something at their house other than sleeping, watching tv or going to work! OMG! we cant have that! Call the bylaw police quick! I think they are about to mow their lawn too!

And they say we are a tolerant nation...

HA!

I compeletely deserve that and acknoledge that I'm going to be one of those grouchy old men sitting on the porch when I retire.

I just think there are better (less trashy) ways of running a business. It's kinda like some crazy cousin that shows up at all your family reunions trying to sell you knifes. It's just something I don't want to have to deal with in a residential neighbourhood (or family reunion setting). Yeah I'm a jerk sometimes.
