that's the correct cable. rca's plugged into your mixer. then the 1/8" jack goes into the line or mic input of your laptop. not the headphone jack. because the headphone jack, is actually an output... so the laptop will not notice that there's a signal coming in. but there should be another headphone looking like jack next to the headphone jack... -that should be the input.

-and if your laptop's input is labeled mic-in, then turn the gain WAY down in your laptop. or you'll blow the speakers in them. the mic preamp is designed to boost the low level signal of a mic to line level. if you run a line level signal (for example hook your dj mixer or external cd player), the mic preamp will amplify the bejesus out of your signal, and scare the crap out of you! -if you're not carefull

Recording use the mic in will be pretty crap.
It can be done but eh.

Maybe something as simple as the Echo Indigo I/O Card will be good.


Also...
To turn down the volume go start menu>control panel>sounds and audio devices>advanced. This will bring up the windows mixer. Turn down mic input volume.

i have the emu1212m for a PC, not a 1616. i don't have a laptop. the emu1616 is a lot more expensive. i think it's laptop equivalent to the 1820 for the PC.

i bought my card off of ebay, direct from creative (owner or emu) refurbished w/full warranty.

hey that store sells the emu 1616 cheaper than anywhere else ive seen, ya im very sure im gona buy it, coz i used few soundcards on my laptop and i wasnt impressed with any, and got sick of buying and selling, so i wanna buy that one since i hear it works well with laptops and just keep it

If you can go firewire.
Iv heard from people that usb runs into alot of problems, especially m-audio.
I current have a usb interface. Numark DXM01 mixer.

hey guys, i plugged that rca cable from my mixer to my laptop the same way u told me how and it worked, when i hit record everything was recorded, but holy, it sounds like there is a war happening when i play it from my laptop, it doesnt sound clean and pure as it is from my mixer speakers, why is that ?

did you turn down the Mic-In volume?
The program you use to record should have volume meters, keep it below 0db. You may need to adjust the recording level as well (same as mentioned above except you choose recording in the windows volume control).

you need do one, two, or all three of theses things...

1) lower your sound card's mic in level via the control pannel.

2) lower the recording level in your recording application. -will probably end up being the same as step one.

3) lower the signal coming out of the mixer. -this is kind of tricky because, if your mixer has a dedicated record out... then it's probably controlled by the individual gains on each channel, and is not affected by the master.

ssssoooooooo... what can you do? connect the mixer to the computer via the master outs (use adapter plugs as you see fit to make the connnection) and then connect the record out to your amp/speaker set up. than way your can use the master out control on your mixer to adjust the amount of signal going into your computer. to help bring your levels under control. make sure you use your mixers UN-BALANCED outs to go to your laptop. using the balanced outs will just send a hotter signal to your laptop, making the problem even more difficult to bring under control.
