So we got to the club shortly after 2am, and to my surprise it was no more than 100 people.... then I remembered - this IS an afterhours club, so with Nevio playing some nice chuggy warmup goodness, we all just began to soak up the night.
Come close to 3am, Nev was just starting to get warmed up - and so was the crowd. In my opinion, Nevio is truly at the top of his game when he is opening for a harder edged/tribal influenced headliner. Less vocals, more rippling basslines, pure dirtyness. Not to take away from what he does when opening up for guys like Morales, Knuckles, Stephan, etc....
Danny Torrence and his brother show up just after 3am, and you could just tell he was as happy as a pig in shit to be able to play in a booth/venue like this away from Montreal. His bro then goes to me, 'fuck - this booth is so Stereo, i love the red.'. Danny, sporting the vintage John Elway jersey, introduced himself (very nice guy), and asked me if i thought anyone would be interested in his new demo. I gave him the 'DUH!' look, then gave them to all the recently converted 'Torrence-Heads' who caught his set at BeB.
Shortly before 4am, Nevio is really starting to get into the groove, and Torrence steps up to the decks. By now, the club was a good size - but the best part, was 90% of the people it seemed, were rocking it out on the dancefloor (and not chilling in the back area). Danny didn't hesitate in blasting out the tunage. Heavy, grinding, chuggy tribal music right off the bat. I felt like maybe he played a little hard to start his set off, but i really enjoyed the softer sounds he shifted to closer to 8am.
He then played the track of the night for me, hands down - Ame - Rej. Such a minimal, true afterhours, drugged out melodic gem. And it sounded amazing on that system. Perfect time to drop it too.... early Sunday morning, when only the true heads are there to witness it. It seems to be a reoccuring theme in this venue - the tunes are at their best from 8am onwards.....
I actually enjoyed myself more so on this night than i did on the opening. It seemed the people who came for this, were there for the music, and for the experience - rather than just going to 'check out' a new venue. True afterhours at it's finest.....
