I watched this in college for an International Relations class. Has anyone seen the remake starring Denzel Washington? Was it any good (question particularly applies if you've seen both)?

I believe Denzel Washington to be a fantastic actor, so I guess I enjoyed the newer one to a certain extent. Doesn't compare to the original, of course, but that may come from a biased perspective, as I view most modern American movies with a great deal of disdain (Americans just can't seem to make films like they used to).

I think it's because good films aren't as appreciated. People are more impressed with in your face visual effects than plot line and subtext anymore. As a result, good filmmakers have a hard time making a profession of it, as their films don't generate the funds.

It's all about marketing, not talent, and it's not just the film industry with that problem.

+1, ppl have no patience for a well developed and engrossing story these days, and would rather sit through 2 hours of flashing lights and CGI unfortunately...i cant even count the # of times my friends have seen what i consider to be a great older movie on my recommendation only to tell me that nothing happened in it, or that it wasnt what they were expecting

and your point about marketing is right, i used to work at an indie film company that purchased loads of solid films (60/40 split btwn foreign and domestic) and documentaries that did well internationally and were made on shoestring budgets, but only about 2 - 3 of the ones we purchased over a 12 week period were actually publicized and released in theaters cause the cost of advertising is so steep and they cant possibly compete with the advertising capabilities of the hollywood studios..

Here's another Free NYC Activity for ya Dani

Free Big City Fishing on the Hudson

http://www.hudsonriverpark.com/faci...cityfishing.htm
^^click for more info

quote:
Big City Fishing is available for all ages on summer weekends in, Greenwich Village (Pier 46), and Clinton (Pier 95). The program’s fishing poles provided on a first come, first served basis, with a half-hour limit when others are waiting.

Great to bring the kids out for some sun and fun. I have to admit the west side piers are littered with events during the summer. Great for bike riding, rollerblading, even sun tanning. Plenty of eye candy for you singles.
