i used to have ducks growing up. we also had a broiler breeder farm with lil chicks who were just a few days old. so, the best thing to start off with at this point would be to get him a red light bulb to keep him warm (i.e. in a box).

to feed him, soak some bread in water and give it to him with the water. when he gets older he'll like grains, grass & dandelions.

unfortunately though, i doubt his (wild) mother would take him back since he's been touched by humans. not sure what you can do....i guess he's stuck with you! CONGRATS on your new baby!!

You may wanna call these people-

http://www.torontowildlifecentre.co...ct/contact.html

As fun as it may seem to raise a wild animal, without the proper knowledge its probably not in the animal's best interest. Who knows- maybe they'll tell you how to care for it?

i think you're right Nat. after searching around on the net, i think that would be the best solution. you never know though, the mother may come back looking for it b/c they do know how many ducklings they have...if it doesn't accept it back, you should definitely take up contact with these people that Nat gave you the link for. but in the meantime, make sure to keep it warm and hydrated. good luck!

Unless somone is a vet or an animal rescue/rehab expert - nobody has any business keeping a wild animal.

Thanks for all replies guys, i will call the wildlife centre (thanks nat!!) in the morning to find out what i can do/where to drop it off at so it will be well taken care of.

And RJ, if you read my first post you would have seen that i have no intention of keeping the duck as i know it is a wild animal and i am definitely not a vet, but was just looking for some advice until i could either find the mother or contact a place like the wildlife centre. I just don't want it to die of hunger or anything in the meantime!

I can see why you'd wanna keep it... but it is really small & I'd be afraid I'd starve it to death unintentionally.

Does it take to you well? Or is it afraid?

Oh i don't want to keep it, i just want to give it somewhere to stay until i can find it's mom or till i call Toronto Wildlife.

It took to me as well as a wild animal could i guess. At first it tried to jump out of the box and kept crying but now it's settled in well and is sleeping. I'll feed it a little tomorrow morning (i don't want to give it too much in case that's not what it should be fed), and go looking for the mom. Should i not be able to find her i'll call the centre and see what they recommend i do.
