Sounds like you had a bad experience with labels. Yes, you should be cautious, but not all labels are crooked. Working with a label is more about getting your music promoted and distributed in the mainstream market, which is not easy to do on your own. It's more about exposure, and reaching a wider audience. To me, that's what getting with a label is about, not making money. Giving your "shit" out for free only goes so far, there's a whole lot of people you will never be able to reach.
Sure, most of us will never get rich from EDM, but it's pretty negative to tell someone they are NOT going to make any money. There're quite a few EDM artists that do see some decent money, so go tell them there's no money to be made.
