Margaret-Ann Blaney is a hypocrite when it comes to women's issues, says the Liberal MLA who is suing the Conservative legislator for slander

Mike Murphy filed the suit against Blaney on Wednesday after she accused him of making a sexist remark.

Murphy used the term "weather girl" in a discussion about the transportation budget during question period last Friday. Outside the legislature, Blaney told reporters Murphy had used the term in a way that was offensive to women.

Murphy said he never intended the term as derogatory, and immediately slapped Blaney with a slander suit.

Murphy said Blaney often cries sexism, but did very little while she was Minister for the Status of Women between 1999 and 2006.

"She has done less for women in New Brunswick than any minister in the last 30 years," Murphy said, "and the fact that she is constantly trying to do something like this is very bad politics."

Blaney made no public comments last month when it briefly appeared that women would lose access to publicly funded abortions in New Brunswick; her pay-equity plan calls for private-sector employers to voluntarily implement equal pay for equal work during the next five years.

Blaney said she has accomplished a lot for the women of New Brunswick. "I'm very proud of what we've been able to do on women's issues in this province," the former cabinet minister said, "and I stand tall and proud on that front."

Blaney has asked the house Speaker to rule on whether Murphy's lawsuit violates her privilege as a member of the legislature.

Murphy says she can be sued because she made her comments outside the chamber

on a related note... ive stopped politically correcting anything that has the word "man" on then end.

For example congressman, chairman, etc is applied equally to women and men who hold these positions. I do this for 2 reasons. 1)If true equality is the goal then why the need to distinguish between women and men? Isnt this what we are trying to end? 2) if anyone says that only "men" are represented by this term, may i remind them that the word "man" is the ending of both "human" and "woman"? Therefor they are fully represented in any title using the word man in it.

BTW i think using the term "person" on the end such as "chairperson" is truely bastardizing the english language. There is no need for it at all.

A Meteorologist is someone who studies Meteorology, the scientific study of weather processes and forecasting. In other words, a scientist. This "weather girl" is most likely not a Meteorogolist. Most people who give the weather are not Meteorologists.

Yup, you are right. However, if you look at the origional context it was what he meant to say.

quote:
"He was talking about the budget," she said. "He said, 'I want the minister to tell me what proof he has from any district engineer,' very professional term, 'any departmental official,' again, professional in approach, 'any climatologist' professional 'or any weather girl,' " she said, recalling Murphy's comments.

When looking up the proper term I came across an award given by the "world meteorological organization" titled "Best Weather Presenter in the World". So "weather presenter" it is?

Almost every single female I know will say "Hey guys" or "what's up man" even when speaking to a group composed ENTIRELY of females or when speaking to another female alone.

Its NOT a huge deal. Fuck.

I was thinking about this on the bus.. my thought process went something along these lines:

Would you call a man presenting the weather a "weather boy"? I don't think it would happen. So yeh, I think the term weather girl is a little sexist, but it's really not THAT big of a deal. I wouldn't make much of a fuss over it, but hey that's politics for you (petty politicians ).

Nah, it's very common place to call the guy a "weatherman" and the gal a "weathergirl". I hope he wins this suit.
