The geothing is probably using a traceroute on everyone's IP which depending on how everyone's individual ISP is setup will result in locations that are different than a standard map query.

its not accurate for me, i am the guy in nunavut, which is weird because i live in an urban center nowhere close to this.

I checked your IP, it would be very strange that you got nunavut - I looked up your IP (from your post) on www.ip2location.com and it's accurate.
As for how accurate this stuff is - it's about 95% accurate - since Google bases much of their Adwords advertising campaigns on geographic proximity on top of keywords. Even ads on TA are only shown only to certain provinces/states/countries.
