- gameboy advance (clam shaped one, silver)
That's a shame to hear.
Do note that the DS is not of the GameBoy line of handhelds (Nintendo is quietly killing off the GameBoy line due to the popularity and success of the DS).
But yes... the games coming out for the GameBoy prior to the DS were pretty weak (although some Advance titles roxxored).

Arguable whether these games are simply slight alterations, of course. I'll just leave you with a 'try it out (with the better games) before you decide to purchase it or not'. The console is THAT influential so I won't say anything further.

Careful! It's simply a Nintendo DS. Not a GameBoy.
While you are correct in saying that the DS, initially, cannot do any of those, there are (fairly) cheap solutions that can fix this 'inability' for you.
Otherwise, this intrigues me since it further points towards a rift of gamers who are more in tune with the media side rather than the gaming side (considering they take it as a negative if the console lacks external media support). To be honest, the DS is simply for gaming. It was never meant to be a multimedia device therefore it wasn't built for those purposes (DS' screens vs. PSP screen - one example). If you see that as a downfall... my suggestion would be to buy a DS anyway.
Once again, I'm sorry to hear that you dislike the DS but I'm more than sure that if you take your time to experience some of the more popular games, you'll be hooked.
As for FFVI, there doesn't seem to be any indicators pointing towards a DS release. Final Fantasy III (JPN) is being remade in 3D and will be out on the DS very soon. You might have mistaken FFIII (USA) for FFVI since it just happens to be that game with a US label.
Since you own a PSP, why not go for emulation? I'm fairly sure they've ported an SNES emulator over to the handheld. Just a matter of download FFVI and playing it once more.
Of course the best way of playing that game is on SNES itself.

wow yan, ur like a walking nintendo library of knowledge... didn't know about the options u just mentioned!
yea, but i've been burned too many times by nintendo's many handheld upgrades that i'm scared to buy the latest in case it gets upgraded again in another year (which is usually the case)

No worries. Nintendo still loves you.
The DS' thunder doesn't seem to be in danger for, at least, the next 2 years. The Lite, while mostly a fashion do-over (the screens and backlighting have been improved, as well), has only recently found its way to the final destination of sales (Europe). A year from now is way too soon for Nintendo to release yet another handheld unit (although I wouldn't be surprising if we'd be hearing something about the next-in-line at 2007's E3).
