i suggest you move over to the Production forum...they will be able to answer a lot of your questions and i think there's people with FL...personally i use Cubase SX3 though...much much more powerful but not easy to learn...although once you conquer the steep learning curve of production things become very fun

Ya, like others said, go to the production forum. They will help you out a lot more... but while I'm here...
On the menus at the top, click on View, then Playlist. See the pattern number on the top center of the screen? The pattern number coresponds to the number in the playlist. Just put a square in the spot where you want the pattern. You can watch tutorials on www.flstudio.com.
