Not many people in the US hunt for their own food anymore, and if they do, they don't NEED to. They could just go to the store, but they like hunting, so that's what they do. |
That's completely not true. If you'd just look at the number of hunting licenses sold in this country, you'd realize that. In Pennsylvania alone, there were 1 million hunting licenses sold in 2004 (sorry, don't have last year's numbers on-hand).
You usually can't go to the store and buy game animals, either. Even if you find venison that's farm raised (not very common), it's really fatty compared to what you get from wild ones. That's because the wild ones actually exercise and the meat's lean.
Even if you don't care about the health aspect of the meat, the other reason that hunting is needed is for population control. Can you imagine if they completely banned deer hunting in Pennsylvania, even for a year? There's usually between 350,000-500,000 deer shot per year. Imagine if those live and the females all have 1-2 fawns. Then think about how many human traffic fatalities are going to occur as a result of those increased numbers.
Lastly, on the protection issue, which isn't really what I'm targeting, because that's the last reason of three that my family owns guns (hunting, target shooting, and protection), what other deterrants do you plan to use?
