I think they are reffering to the profit margin. The amount they took in above what they needed to cover their costs. The article was baised by saying that it could be "up to $1.7 million", when I believe that must be the total revenue from the events. I am sure they will be required to pay back a lot less.

The party would be dumb not to make money on such events, hell it is fundraising, they just didn't declare it. We will let an investigation prove whether they did it purposely or becaues they just didn't understand.

Obviously government accountibility is working.
(No one ever said the accountibility act was party biased so all you Liberal lovers should just take a back seat; I know it's your first real bash at the new government but come on...)

uh...I copy and pasted that from the Toronto Star's website...and made a point of checking both the Post and the G&M's site too (particular the Post, just to shut people like you up).

if you don't know how to do a search, that's your problem.

and it's YOU who doesn't understand. They charge between $500-800 to attend these functions...that's a *wee* bit more than covering a meal and lodging (not everyone takes lodging), which the CPC THEMSELVES have admitted. The law is that unless something tangible is received in return (meal, lodging), then it's a political donation.

Note that the CPC spokesperson isn't denying they fucked up...he's satying they didn't know...

good try though!

Neither the Star nor the Post printed that story. The CP story, however, appears on the the Star website and on Canada.com (a CanWest Global/NP site).

You're forgetting the cost of renting the Montreal Convention Centre for three days, the cost of banners, printing costs for materials, badges, staff, security, insurance, music, etc. It all adds up. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they lost money on the convention.

funny, I agree...I'd much rather read about soccer postings over banter back and forth between armchair/quasi-politicians of the worst kind....

soooooo......Italy wins tommorow, end of story.

I PERSONALLY WENT TO ALL THREE OF THEIR WEBSITES AND SAW THIS *EXACT* ARTICLE POSTED THERE. What part of that are you not understanding? Yes, it's a CP article, but it appeared on all three online sites...The National Post's online presence is on Canada.com:

www.canada.com/nationalpost

Online newspapers also frequently update and amend their stories as new info is updated. The Globe has since written their own article and sources the CP article in question.

anyway...your nitpicking...there is an article, as quoted indicating it's a CP article, that was posted on all three sites.

I'm not forgetting anything...

quote:
the Elections Act stipulates that convention fees do constitute a donation "to the extent that the person paying the fee is not receiving a good or service that has any commercial value beyond its political value."

I suppose we'll let the appropriate regulatory body or authorities decide what commercial value all of those things provide to the individuals paying those fees, should a complaint be filed.

Just because it costs money to print a pamphlet...does that have commercial value TO THE INDIVIDUAL PAYING THE FEE or does it more have a political value to the party issuing it?

I believe that is up for debate...

anyway...the point, back to the original post, is that it's funny no one seems to know what does and does not need to be declared...no one has put a figure on anything...you'd *think* the folks running the show would know these things!

At least two large national newspapers decided that the piece was not fit to print. It appears though that they have CP feeds on their websites.

In fact, the Canada Elections Act does not stipulate that at all.

See above; it appears that the Liberal hack and the low-level official got it wrong.
