It worked fine the way it was for nearly 200 years, then people started fucking it up. To be honest, if 9/11 had never happened, causing half of this country to vote out of fear, I don't think a lot of this stuff would be allowed to fly. I don't think Bush would have been re-elected if we weren't at war, and even if he was, Congress wouldn't be as divided, but since we're at war, they've been throwing out this black and white "You're either with us or against us" line, and no one in the government wants to be against us, so not enough people stand up.

I do know for a fact that Americans are strongly disliked in South Korea. That's because there's American soldiers stationed there, and from what I've read their behavior has been terrible, esp. with respect to Korean girls and ordinary citizens.

Edit: While I don't believe that 9/11 was orchestrated by the US like a lot of conspiracy theorists, it sure as hell worked to Bush's advantage, and I understand how some could come to that conclusion. I try not to be THAT cynical. There's no way he could get away with all of this shit if it hadn't happened, though.
