I'd say the overall level has been quite poor. And no Holland or Brazil playing beautiful football this time to make up for it.

So far its dull.

Everyones playing defensive, everyones afraid to tackle because of diving, there are hardly any goals, matches are painfully boring sometimes and the amount of ugly play and timewasting is really staggering.

A great amount of shite posted in this thread it has to be said.

"it a shame brazil, argentina, holland czech are out, its no good with out them"

Why bother with a world cup? every 4 years we should just have a one of match between brazil and argentina to decide it. It seems that would make everyone happy.

you're kinda missing the point. if the 4 remaining teams were all playing attractive attacking football half the people here would be happy with the cup. and while having the usual suspects in the last few games usually means very good football, i bet given the football shown in this cup everyone would've been happy with some Czech Rep-Ivory Coast final.

that being said, Italy, France, Germany and Portugal IMO are all worldwide top teams, definitely part of the "usual suspects" group. it's just that:

Germany - not the worst team to watch, sometimes their forwards make nice combinations, but most of their danger comes from long shots and that's it. game against Argentina was dull as fuck.

Italy - defensive team by default that will never care to dominate a game. massive technical ability but they only use it when they need to.

France - definitely on top form, but the team is mostly based on players that already got their consagration 8 years ago.

Portugal - flairy and technical, but we haven't really been exciting in any of this tournaments games except perhaps against Iran. While this is one of our strongest squads ever, we haven't been as pleasant to watch as in Euro 2000, or even in an Euro 2004 where we relied mostly on individualities rather than in a strong collective.

Argentina was by far the most exciting team in this tournament IMO. The goals by Cambiasso against Serbia, and by Maxi against Mexico, were exactly the kind of stuff that should have gone in the history DVDs as part of a glorious world cup campaign. They were the only team that made football look really damn good. My satisfaction with the world cup dropped by half when Germany won that penalty shootout.

Czech, Ghana and Ivory were also exciting, but to win the world cup you need to be allround solid, none of these were.

I mean they already got their cup a long time ago, and already clearly went downhill afterwards, so it's awkward and strange to see them on the top again without having been fully replaced by a new generation.

EURO 2004 exemplifies that. Greece won by playing football in exactly the opposite way it should be played in. The amount of 1-0s they chalked up in that tournament was ridiculous and the final with portugal put me to sleep for a good 60 minutes of the game.

I dont consider portugal among footballs elite barring Euro 2000 where I beleive they deserved to win the tournament (Stupid Xavier fucked it up) because of the dirty tactics they use and this seems to be a common practice in the club system there (Porto - Celtic Uefa Cup final). Funny thing is I beleive this is a better team than the one in 2000 with a better coach but they not clicking.

Germany IMO lost their favorites status after Klinsmann and Lothar Matthaus retired (they have failed to produce a player of that caliber since then but luck is clearly with them in the world cup).

Italy have shown flashes of the offensive tactics that were expected of this team but havent been up to snuff on the whole. IMO they are the only one of the usual suspects left in the tournament because even though they might not have met expectations in recent years, luck has clearly been against them since 1998.

France I think are the only one of the lot who have been playing good offensive minded football since the knockout stages. A rekindled Zidane and an impressive ribery have made this team always push forward looking for goals. Vieira and Makelele have had fantastic tournaments and are doing their job preventing counter attacks when the team pushes forward. Henrys been ok but I still rate him low at international level. Hes trying to make his speed his secret weapon but its turning out to be his biggest enemy given how 90% of his runs end up offside.

yes i do understand, portugal and italy don't deserve to be there, i get it, these guys cheat their way through.

but what about france and germany? they were superior to their opponents.

its a one match game, if you're not 100% then you loose and you're out. Its not hockey or baseball where you can afford to loose one and where the very best teams prevail (4 games out of 7).

france played better than Brazil that game and Germany goalie prevailed over a very good argentinian side in a very equal game for both sides...

stop crying and come back to reality.

I disagree. Look at the teams the 4 semi-finalists these teams beat.

England - complete muck. Probaly one of the worst teams to watch in the World cup. If your a footballing fan you would much prefer to see them through.

Brazil - Shit. Look past the players on the team sheet and go by their performances in this world cup. They dont deserve a semi-final spot, i dont even think they deserved a 1/4 spot even. France were the better team and more attractive attacking play. Delighted brazil are out. They were terrible to watch.

Argeintina - Great against S&M. Thats about it. Ivory coast should of gotten something from that game. The match against holland was brutal. Great game against mexico. What happens in the 1/4 final? The supposed great attacking team who show how football should be played, they take off there most creative attacking player and put a defensive midfielder on in his place to try and sit back and win 1-0, yet everyone is upset they didnt make it to the semi's?

Ukraine - i wont even bother.

Now for the winners of the semi's

Portugal - Excellent attacking potential, certainly alot more then Englad. Deco, figo, and ronaldo are all great going forward. DEco and figo are usually great to watch. Ronaldo can be very frustating but has the potential to shine. I think they match against the french will be excellent. But teams are excellent on the counter. both have the same 4-2-3-1 line up. I think this will be a great game. On for they deserve to be their. WOuld you holland or england there instead? I certainly wouldnt

France - Terrible in the group stages. Pulled it out against spain and brazil. Probaly the best team to watch. Zidane is back to his old self. Ribery is finally living up to the hype. These lads remind me of the rugby team, when they want to play and turn up they are the best in the world to watch. When they aint arsed there muck. I think they have eventually turned up and wont disappoint now.

Germany - You cant argue there goalscoring ability. @ excellent forwards and one of the best attacking mids in ballack. They havent been great i will admit. PErsonnally i think these have been the least enjoyable to watch.

Italy - People seem to forget defending is a an essential part of the game. Its also the hardest part of the game. Watching these lads do it is a joy. Cannavaro has been amazing, player of the tournement for me so far(cannavaro for player of the tournement and italy to win the world cup is 52/1, not a bad bet if anyone is interested). Zidane not far behind though. They came out of a tough group. The match against USA was terrible but i enjoyed the ghana and czech match. I think they deserved to go through. Why do people want the czechs in their? They were brutal.

The team who deserve to be in there is Agrentina. After peckerman's decisions against germany though i am happy to see them out.
