In the late 1990s, 2000, 1st half 2001, EDM wasn't really underground. Clubs everywhere (at least here) were stupid packed on any night no matter who played. Remember when Ten15 would have lines in both directions at least a block long. People at work who never listend to EDM were suddenly knowing about the DJs, tracks, etc. Was insane.
As far as SF, no doubt house rules here. SF own distinctive type of house that is. Think Mark Farina, Miguel Migs, or Kaskade. All natives of here.
But that type of house is typically found in the million smaller clubs throughout the city.
The bigger clubs don't really have a focus these days as the scene is still recovering.
Ten15 on Friday nights is constantly mixing it up. You can find house, trance, breaks, and even hip-hop from time to time in the main room. The front room is generally hip hop, upstairs more house...except on special nights. The new basement plays Top 40 I think, but I could be wrong. I just know it was the initial plan. Saturday nights at Ten15 are typially trance or progressive in the main room, hip-hip in the front room, house upstairs, and the same new stuff in the basement. Ten15 will always be my second home. I might not agree with a lot of the stuff that has gone on there, but will always have mad respect for the place. Not too fond with the focus on local stuff, though. But it's business.
Ruby Skye is all over the place, too. While it's progressive or a bit of tribal most of the time, it's now the home to the vast majority of major trance DJs that come through too, though still not a whole lot. Trance nights are usually on Fridays as they are usually Spundae events. Spundae also throws a lot of progressive nights at Ruby, too. When Spundae isn't involved, it's typically plain ole Remedy doing stuff with house. Saturday nights can be a mix too between House, Tribal, and sometimes Trance too (Christopher Lawrence).
Ruby Skye has been having a lot of amazing Thursday, Sunday, or other ran night parties too...Spundae has brought in a few major DJs on non-regular nights and all have turned out to be amazing nights. Great vibes.
There's Mezzanine which has tried to be a player in the major club scene around here, too. It has some major faults which has pushed some of the major promoters away. I love the underground feel of the club. But the DJ setup is just rediculous. In the beginning it was a makeshift plywood setup that vibrated all too hell and was uncomfortable. now they have a perminant stage that's in the corner but the acoustics with the setup are just bad, IMO. DJs don't really like either setup. If they had a damn solid DJ booth setup in the original position the place would be much better for DJ acts. Despite all that, there are still some great events that happen there from time to time. Lee Burridge plays there (Spundae, Satellite SF event) at a pre-LoveFest party on September 22. Same party happened last year the night before Love Parade and it was amazing!!! Mezzanine these days usually handles concerts more than DJ gigs.
There's also Mighty which is a great intimate venue. I love the place. Wish the sound was better. But some AMAZING nights. James Zabiela. Gabriel & Dresden. Armin van Buuren + G&D (free party...was amazing!). MarcoV. It's a smaller joint, but I love the feel of it.
There's the small lounge ANU that's mainly known for its Satellite nights on Wednesday nights from 10pm-2am. A TON of mid-major prog DJs play there because the scene here is just real tough and no promoters will take chances on the DJs at huge venues. Think James Holden, Dave Seaman, James Lavelle, Demi, Poalo Mojo, and tons tons more. The venue is not my cup of tea so I don't really ever go, but I cannot deny the amazing talent that goes through there.
If you want an after-work shindig to go to, there's the infamous, long running Qool party at 111 Minna on Wednesday nights from 5pm-10pm.
Then there's the underground shit. LOTs of underground parties here. Just have to get to know people who know about them. I typically don't really go to them because I just never really feel it. Have an old roommate who would do security at them like every weekend so they are around. Just have to look.
