I always hear/say a difference between there and they're.

I stand corrected: In some dialects, the words "there" and "their" do have a glide that doesn't exist in "they're", but the three words are homophones in other regions

Still, "their" and "there" are homophones in most (if not all) varieties of English I know of (and strangely rhyme with "air"), so there is something wrong with the writing system. Actually, even the world "varieties" is bizarre: "ie" has two completely different sounds in the same word

i'm just saying if someone spells a word wrong in a casual conversation its not the end of the world. i mean i don't feel the need to use CAPS when i type online...is that the worst thing in the world?

And still, people who learn it as a second language rarely make those mistakes. I've noticed that confusion between words like their/there/they're is almost exclusive to native speakers.
