This may have been posted before, but basically, the 'MIDI channel' is 4 rotary knobs (sends different MIDI notes per 'click', depending on which way you turn it), and four buttons. There's a 3-position layout switch as well as an A/B deck focus selector that doubles as a tap (MIDI clock).

Be careful, though, since it's misleading that the Nuo4 has x number of MIDI signals; you can only use so many at once (the 3-position layout switch). You can also operate channels 2/3 in MIDI mode, which means you get additional controls.

The MIDI functionality is sufficient for what I need; again, I haven't really played with Ableton, so I can't comment on how well it works together.

Perhaps you can ask Max Thompson on this forum; in another thread, he mentions he uses the Nuo4 with Ableton Live.

Well thanks for thinking of me I wouldn't consider myself an expert with the Nuo 4 and certainly not with Ableton but I have been working on integrating them for the past 3 months or so and can say for the price, it is the best deal you are going to find. Don't buy the 'IT SENDS 89 MESSAGES!!!' marketing crap, because chances are you're only going to use one layout (for the center strip) at a time unless you type out everything onto the included label templtae (but then you're squinting at size 7 labels, also not fun). Thats one of the examples of how Ecler tries REALLY hard to make this mixer integrate well with software, but I've found I only use 1 layout at time. It comes down to what you are going to use it for. Right now I can only truly utilize 2 channels of Ableton + my CDJs which is not enough. There really is no all in one solution (not yet at least, don't even think about the 3D!) so your best bet is to do as much research as you can and buy one product. If it works, then see what else you'd like to do and try to get something very modular. I'm getting a Novation Remtoe pretty soon to control some more channels and aid in my production work...but yes anyway get the Nuo over the 800. If you think it sucks you can always sell the Nuo and get the 800 without a problem because the Nuo is so much cheaper.

Thanks Max, I should be getting my mixer very soon. DJM-800 is still on my list though I'll give Nuo a try first...
