Different materials will have different effects on specific frequency ranges. This is why when sound studios are built, careful attention is given to the size of the room, the symetry of surfaces the sound bounces on, and the sound absorbtion of certain materials. Without putting hands behind your ears, you'd have a considerably different sound if the wall behind you wasn't made of concrete and instead was made of something like... human hands! (ok that's kinda creepy)
