Gotta agree with the minimal thing. Won't be long before technoheads are proclaiming Richie Hawtin a sell-out (heck, I think some are already).

Thing to keep in mind is it's not just minimal itself, but all of the similar sub-genres that are garnering the momentum along with it: mono-tone tech house, microhouse, back-to-basic trance (neotrance, I think they're trying to call it), even some prog-psy. Minimal will be the umbrella term to call anything with a stripped-down sound, much like electro became the umbrella term for anything with an analogue sound, or trance became anything with a supersaw. Huge debates will erupt over what is/isn't proper minimal, and passionate fans will dig their trenches into either side, spurring on endless, circular debates regarding the sounds. Old standbys will heckle the new fans of minimal, making glorious claims that they listened to Richie Hawtin only before he sold out (pre-Cocoon era), and that Closer really is a great album.

Possibly.

we seem to have the cycle figured out then, heh

I understand what you mean though, its the same story as "progressive" or "electro" (and maybe even trance)

My gf is absolutely correct: Not ACTUAL mininal as we know it or that has existed in the techno realm for years (Plastikman, T-1000), nor minimal that has existed in the classical realm for decades (Reich, Reilley, Cage). But something that will co-opt mininal, or gain the label minimal in blatant disregard of its history, like electro has done, like trance has done. A minimal strain of house, coming from the microhouse and tech house scene. Not a new thing (Swayzak has been doing it for years), but it will get much more attention soon. I see the Swedish House Mafia have been evolving towards it lately (they are sounding less and less French, and more and more glitchy in the last year....think Pryda - Aftermath)...Mathew Jonson, Jay Tripwire, Mathew Dear, Akufen, Trentemoller (and I LOVE the Trentemoller)...good things ahead. It's not true minimal...but it will be called minimal regardless, because the scene is like that.

goddamn the music industry is getting boring. There's almost no difference in working in a factory or dancing in a club nowadays.

I want flowerpower house with ethnic funky grooves to be the leading genre.

Trentemoller was good. He still hasn't gotten over the fact that he made that remix of "What Else is There?" though, and needs to keep coming up with new stuff like he was at the end of last year.

But don't tell me that means you actually like Matthew Dear.

Mwahaha. That would be great on so many levels.

But I can't possibly imagine labelling Dear as 'minimal.' Anyone who thinks that tracks like "Tide" fall under that label is either lacking a lot of information or functioning ears.

Minimal the NEXT big thing? Erm hello, its huge now, all the magazines have had cover mount 'minimal' mixes in the last few months, look at who is playing Fabric each week etc. This 'Electro' sound is now passe as MOS are raping it and car adverts feature it too, its so dated now. Minimal cant be the next big thing as its already huge and has been for a good couple of years (in its current state).

I personally think minimal peaked last year.

I don't think minimal (techno) can get much bigger really.

If minimalism is the next big thing, it would have to be minimalism applied to some other sort of music, and I doubt that.

I think the next big genre is skastep.

It's Tech-House, maybe Deep House.

"Microhouse" was on its way in but I don't think it's ever really going to fully take over.

Minimal is on its way out already.

I think.

No no no no no. Read my first post. NOT ACTUAL MINIMAL....so it won't be pretentious and stupid. It will be something that sounds like minimal, or will be something funky and fun with a simple premise that will fill the clubs, like the current "electro" is......it's not minimal. People will just CALL it minimal. Like how they call everything today electro, even though it's not. Like how you call trance...

Personally i think 'Neo-trance' will be the resurgance of good respected melodic music. Alot of 'minimal' producers are seeping in these melodies and some of these tracks sound like old early 90s 'trance' tracks. Bring back the days of simplified EDM i say, todays stuff most of the time is too polished and not enough placement on the parts that make it stand out.
