Although I was really looking forward to this event, I have mixed reviews.
The Good:
- Decor
- Matt C's opening set (besides a few really out of place tunes)
- Mark Farina - Wow! I think I liked almost every single song in that set. He was on fire. Funky and jazzy all the way through, with elements of hip hop and downtempo. I absolutely loved the downtempo stuff he was playing. He didn't play it last time when he was at Sneak's Birthday.
- KENNY GLASGOW - OMG! Get this man on the resident roster at Sonic PLEASE. That was such a fucking dark and dirty set. He has a very unique sound compared to all the other Toronto residents. I was amazed.
The mediocre:
- The crowd. There were a few really good dancers, and there were some people that were friendly, but there were also a lot of people that were rough around the edges. I also witnessed a bit of messyness.
The bad:
- The heat - This was definately one of the hottest I've ever attended. I was literally drenched with sweat for a good few hours.
- NO FILLING UP WATER BOTTLES - This was just completely unacceptable. To me, it doesn't get any more shady than this when it comes to running an afterhours club. It was so fucking hot in there, and people were loosing sweat at a rate of 2 bottles of water per hour. Not only is this illegal, but it's also amoral. This is clearly a cash grab technique. With tickets at $40, and selling booze (which raised my eyebrow a bit in the first place), they shouldn't have gouged their customers again with this shadyness. I don't care if it's an "Industry thing" or not. This should not be allowed to happen.
- Mario J - I'm sorry, but how do you play a set like that after Farina?
All in all, despite some sketchy people and some very shady business practices, I had a good time because of the company I was with. I will definately see Farina again.
