Nah they're the same.

I couldn't comment on macs because I've never used them enough. They both have pros and cons, the PC's pros seem to suit me more.

Honestly, give mine + the mystical one's recommendations a go - even for a week and you'll see a difference. Then you could use the cash you were gonna spend on the mac to get nice instruments + fx.

You've got X amount of cash, be tight as possible with it.

This always has been good enough for me. Haven't had any need for an antivirus software in the past 2 years

I love macs as they are solid though. I have had so many problems with this PC and MACs last for yrs. Plus i can get a cheap G5 since the new ones have come out. I wa splanning on Using my PC for music production only and then buying a new XP - update one, then buy a new mac G5 and use that for everything else, playing music, word documents, internet etc..

If you are incapable of keeping your Windows XP PC from being exploited and destroyed, you are going to be incapable of doing ANYTHING in Linux. Just my honest two cents.

True security in Linux is more robust but you have to know how to use it and it isn't as simple as clicking 'yes' on a firewall and doing spysweep every now and again.

Agreed. You won't even get it installed.

use windows 2000, its 500% more secuer than XP without an SP's....plus, it uses about 40% less memory to run

i have no spy/ad/virus cheakers, never have, never will....i have also never had a virus [ok, i do check my computer once a year, but w/e :P]

The ONLY way a user gets soemthign on their computer, is if they put it there, knowingly or unknowingly, simple fact...know what your downloading, know what your installing, read the EULA, and you will be fine

that's my 2 cents, you will nto believe how many people are duped into doing all kinds of unessicary shit to keep a virus out...and still get a virus.

I promise, when you get all that secruity crap on your computer, you will find the RAM usage is mroe than half of your total RAM, i been installing/fixing windows systems for a long time, and that is almost always the cause for computers running terribly slow

"my computers running slow!!! do i have a virus??"..."no maam, its the 5 thousand dollars worth of antispy/ad/virus programs you ahve running all at the same time scanning every byte that enters and leaves your computer 24/7"..no to mention all the crap windows XP loads up when you start the operating system.

As for linux, SURE, get linux, i love it...i can't use it, nor can you...if you plan to make music that is [or play any games that don't use openGL]..name one good program that runs on linux with VSTi support..

not to mention its illegal to use .mp3 on linux [believe it or not, you need a license to use .mp3, windows comes with this.]

then again, most people useing linux, i find don't care much for those little copyright law BS hehe :P

[/end rant]

I agree Win 2k Pro is better than XP. It uses far less resources, and has far less bollocks with it. I use 2k on my P3 laptop (laptop is dual booted with 2k and Suse) and its great, feels fast, responsive and clean. My PC running XP error's FAR more than my laptop.

About needing a licence to run mp3's on linux, thats not totally correct. Because everything with linux is free, they cannot include in the distributions programs that play DVD movies or play .mp3's, you have to add them afterwards yourself - but if you use say Suse, adding a 3rd party audio program is easy with YaST.
