I worked for a little while for a company called Squaresoft here in So Cal. It was the late 90s and I was still in undergrad. The pay was horrid, but it was a fun job. If you stick at it and do a good job of networking I'm sure one could progress to a better position

Here are my experiences...
When I first got out of college, I interviewed over the phone for a videogame testing job for EA in Virginia. They gave me the job and sent me the offer letter, but after looking it over, it just wasn't in my best interests. I would have had to relocate from Maryland, and they also only would pay me $10 bucks an hour.
So I held out and ended up getting a job in IT for a videogame company in Redmond, WA. The only difference here is they paid for the relocation. For the 2 years I worked at this company, I was surrounded by game testers. They didn't make much to start, but the ones at the top and in managing positions all were making bank. I became friends with one of them who had started out as a tester for Sega and eventually worked his way up to becoming QA manager and was now making 100k. All from starting out as a game tester. So I say go for it because if you put enough time into you, you can someday work your way to becoming a QA lead, then a manager and you'll be set.
