new egg ftw. I will be making a shuttle PC soon with a good amount of space (have tons of space on my xbox) and running dual boot. 1 linux for checking email, surfing, blah blah blah, (dont know what distro yet) and 2 windows, 1 music production and 1 games.

Don't bother with Dual Core for music production. There isn't any music production software out there that can actually make full use of it.
Sounds to me like you need to take a look at what you have running in the background and may also need to invest in some RAM. RAM is one of the keys to being able to work with lots of stuff.
What VSTs are you using?
As Stu said you may well want to have to separate installations for games and music.
I just got me the Intel Core 2 Duo, And PC6400 Dual channel Rams
I just tried it out with 20 VSt and 9 FX And it runs sooo smooth!:. Processor not over 30 %
So now Im using:
M-Audio 24/96 Sound Card.
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Dual Core 1066Mhz FSB CPU... (I'm recommending it to everyone btw hehe Great cpu )
Corsair Dual channel (PC6400) 800Mhz RAM ... Also Very good performance!:.
Thanks... everyone!.. =)

I would say proper drivers for everything.
I don't really see any reason why it was crashing for you (besides possibly bad software).
It's always a good idea to make sure your computer is not running a bunch of random processes; I think mine boots up with around 32 (including antivirus and firewall (AVG free edition and Kerio/Sunbelt Personal). Even now, I have 37 running, and that includes lots of additional programs running.

Im suprised that it took untill the last post to point out what it is.
Make sure you are running good asio drivers.
And check the sample rate and latency.
Your probably running the soundcard at 96k with a latency of 1ms or something.
