Steve Porter's career has exploded as he returns from a tour across Australia, Europe and Asia. He played for his biggest audience yet - 1.2 million electronic music fans at the legendary Love Parade in Berlin on Paul van Dyk's float. He humbly returns to NYC to play at crobar on Rriday, September 8th in a Back-to-School special. We caught up with him on his travels, his Love Parade experience and serving Porterhouse at Porter's house.
You’ve been touring non-stop since the release of your Porterhouse compilation. How’s your stamina for traveling now? How do you get by?
I've been doing great considering how relentless the touring has been. I think part of it is that I'm still traveling to places I've never been to before which is always exciting. Also the touring has been more organized than in years past. I used to have itineraries like going from Dublin, Ireland to Atlantic City, or Madison, Wisconsin to Lima, Peru. You take whatever gigs that you can get, but it's always a bonus when you can line up the gigs like dominos... they tip over a lot easier.
Which city or club has held the greatest fascination for you?
Womb in Tokyo is always a unique experience. Every time I play there I feel like I'm at home and one look at the crowd there and you'd think you're at a rock and roll show. There's a certain type of enthusiasm for electronic music in that club that I haven't seen anywhere else. The Tokyo scene definitely rocks!
You recently played the Love Parade with Paul Van Dyk at his pre-party Love from Above and the Vandit float itself. How was the experience?
What an awesome weekend that was. Paul's "Love From Above" party had such a great vibe and even though I was one of the only artists not spinning pure trance the crowd was extremely open minded and ready to rock. I played in the smaller venue called "Glasshaus" at the same time Sander Kleinenberg was playing in the main Arena and then we all met up to catch Paul's set to roughly 6,000 raging fans. It was hard to find a person who didn't have a smile on their face at that party. We all woke up at around 11am on Saturday morning and walked directly to the Vandit float. The Berlin Love Parade is one of the biggest gatherings for electronic music on this planet, thousands of people who might not normally listen to dance music come to just check out the spectacle. The floats started moving at 12pm and every artist on the Vandit float played 30 minute sets. My set was at 1:30 and by 2pm all you could see was a ocean of people in every direction. Playing for a crowd of 1.2 million people is something you'll never forget.
Any additional plans to play with Paul van Dyk?
Yeah I'm playing with Paul van Dyk at the Roseland Ballroom here in Manhattan on November 22nd. It's gonna be such a thrill to play that gig in my backyard.
Porterhouse @ Porter’s house – what’s happens when good DJs host parties?
He surrenders his DJ duties and becomes a 24 hour door man, maybe some people would call it a Porter? Horrible joke, but honestly, I literally had to hire friends to entertain as I did laps to my front door and back ushering in hundreds of people throughout the night. It was a legendary party but the aftermath was a work of art. I have never seen so many empty bottles, but I've also never had such an amazing housewarming party I my new loft.
Did you serve Porterhouse to your guests?
Yes, Porterhouse steaks were on the menu of course! We always stock a few in the fridge, ready to cook on the grill on the patio. A few very special guests also brought some extra Porterhouse steaks as housewarming gifts. I'm much better at cooking Porterhouse in the DJ booth than I am in kitchen though.
What’s going on in the Studio?
I just finished rebuilding my studio so I'll be continuing work on my new album immediately. I hadn't been doing much beyond remixes and re-edits in the past few months because of my rigorous tour schedule and the move to Soho, but it was actually a very needed break. It's nice to step back and soak life in every once and a while, music is like a muscle to me, when you clench it too hard you get a cramp. I'm excited for the re-invention of Steve Porter.
You worked with Lee Burridge last year in the studio when he did his 365 Part I: NYC. Now [he’s about to embark on Part II this September. Do you guys have plans to reconvene in the studio - Lee is moving to NYC in September?
Lee and I have plans indeed to work on new music this fall and I can't wait. It's always a pleasure to hangout with a legend not to mention Lee is one of my favorite people. We'll be working on the funky & the abstract, stuff you can dance to but also makes you double take. Lee brings the extraterrestrial element, the music he plays rocks out on Earth and also gives you the sense that it would rock out on some alien planet far, far away. Lee's influence expands my brain.
You’re heading to San Francisco again for the newly re-branded Loveparade (now LoveFest) – from your experience last year what can people expect?
It should be the best San Francisco "Love Fest" yet. More people are aware to it now and more people are involved. I'll be playing on the Supper Club float and also playing at the Supper Club later on in the night. I expect to see more body paint, more wild costumes, and more loving, happy faces than ever before. America should really embrace the fact that we have such an event in this country.
Well good luck with your Fall tour dates and San Francisco LoveFest. We look forward to seeing you on our home turf at crobar on Friday, September 8th and with Paul van Dyk at Roseland on November 22nd (www.made-event.com).

I've never been a big fan of themed dress-up parties, but I think I'm just going to have to go to this one. Porter's a great DJ, a fact that is made all the better by his collaboration with PvD, something that one really wouldn't expect if one were to just look at their respective styles.
On a different note, I'm guessing that there'll be a very very different crowd at this party. If it gets promoted well (which it looks like it is being), it should get large numbers of college students showing their IDs to get in free b4 midnight. This demographic doesn't usually go to the 'superclubs' in large numbers, as most students don't have the cash to spare on such things, or simply think that paying cover is stupid (perhaps they have a point). With that in mind, I'll bet we'll have a lot of college kids that are there just to have a good time.

They may have. The email I got this week did not indicate that DJ Serg would be playing from 11-2 like they have been indicating for the past 2 months.
