God damnit i hate you!
Ok, just your post.

What size LEDs should I use for replacing the popup light?

LED 10mm Blue 4500mcd

Emmitted colour: blue
Lens colour: waterclear
Wave length: 470
nm: 26
Pd W: 130nW
If mA: 30
If mA (peak): 100
Min: 3.2
Vf (V) Typ: 3.5
Max: 4.0
IV Min: 1400
MCD Typ: 4500
Viewing Angle: 25

...Is there anything I need to know? Most of that is irrelevent but this seems like the thread.

Also, what resistor do I use?

i used 5mm with 1kohm 1watt (1/2 watt is fine I think, but it is no harm using bigger) Like you said most of that spec is not really of interest, appart from the mcd ratting which is how bright the LED is.

Can you post a pic of your modded blue light?
Iv been looking at lots of stuff with my bro and we looked at luxeon super bright LEDS. For 1 watt you get about 20 lumens.
Was the led you used just a normal 5mm 5000 MCD? Im worried it wont be bright enough.

5000mcd would probably be ok, but just get the brightest one you can. i don't remember what mine are, but i think they were about 8000mcd? i used the 5mm - it is a near perfect fit as a replacement, but without the resistor will just burn out as the globe runs off 21V and the LED is rated at about 3.5. I don't know the luxeons appart from big ones called stars I think so can't help ya there. Also when trying to get the globe out of the white piece it is held in with, push it up from the bottom with a small screwdriver. To do this you need to push the globe sleeve down after taking of the casing and feed the wires up the slot. Probably doesn't make much sense in text, but if you pull it appart you'll know what I mean. Also I should add that you shouldn't do this unless your out of warranty, as any modification will void it.

I'd happily post a pic except my video camera is in a mates hands as I shot their wedding (it has a built in camera). Hope to get it back soon, but it means I can't show a pic. Also the light is the one for the above TT which is in pieces. In order to put it in the second TT I'd have to partly dismantle it to be able to show the effect on a record. I can plug it into the circuit board by removing the platter, but again without the camera kinda pointless.
on a side note, I've just got a new mobile and it has a better camera than my video, but the damn software is not compatible with a mac - really shits me.
If your doing this mod, just make sure you don't cause a short with the LED.

They sell solderless blue led kits on ebay which cover everything(strobe, 33/45 lights, popup lights, and the pitch slider light), but they're a lot more expensive than buying individual leds. I did it and the blue strobe is really nice, it's so much brighter than the red.

Does anybody know how much it would cost to get the metal part painted in a professional body shop? I think thats what they did in that link.

Cost to paint might be 50-100 bucks here but you'd really have to ask around in your area. It would depend how much they do ie sand blast or chemical strip back to metal, or just rub back and paint over. how much prep work is required etc.

I also swapped out the strobe, pitch and speed button LEDs rather than just buying a kit. All up, each deck cost about $5 aus (second still to be done). Hardest part to source was the rectangle LED. Also, one of the guys on djforum (optic his name is) says that they have had some problems with the build of the popup kit causing a short. He is who told me the consequences.

Thanks for the reply, my brother is going to ask around at uni about the super LEDs. My decks are around 13 years old so they may be a slight bit past warrenty.
Iv decided that the 5k will be ok but how cool will it be to have the super bright ones... just for the hell of it!
