I think if you have some good headphones..one's that are noise-cancelling..good isolation..then you are less likely to go deaf. Good headphones that can block out those high decibels from the club speakers and all of the ambient noise of a club. I don't do clubs, but in my room I turn up my monitors quite loud and with my new headphones (Denon HP1000), they block out a lot of the sound. So usually the only times I use my monitors are when I'm EQing after bringing in the tracks, but for beatmatching I use my headphones.

See, i don't think a lot of DJs realise that they should wear protection.

But the thing is, i don't see anything in their ears to protect them.

Is it possible to see the custom made fitted earplugs? Or are they in so deep, and well-moulded.

I didn't even see PVD wearing protection.

Probably because they aren't.

I've seen custom molded musicians earplugs in person, and they are definately noticable if you are looking directly at somone from the side (they do not stick out).

I don't know why a lot of big name DJs aren't more careful with their ears.

Main speakers are usually directed opposite to the booth, and they can adjust the volume of their monitors, so it shouldn’t be a problem unless the club is really small and the sound system is overkill.

I wondered about this from time to time as well.

Guys who have been playing for like 20yrs with no real hearing protection...

However, sound is getting more defined, louder, and bigger as the years have gone. I think it's becoming more of an issue now-a-days compared to 20yrs ago.

Most of what I've read state that headphones are the worst for your ears, even more so than the main speakers.

Yeah, exactly.

Ever since i got into audio and started doing a lot of tweaks in software like Foobar, and got expensive headphones i found that i listen to music really loudly, without even realising at first.

It's gotten so bad that when I take the senns off my ears, people halfway to the other side of the uni library can hear it.

It's just that when u have shit audio, when u turn it up, u hate it. But once u have good audio, u just wanted it louder and louder, and it keeps going like that. It just sounds so crisp and sweet. The sound is oragsmic. I love how the headphones shake and squeeze my head. It feels great.

I already have problems in whispered conversations. But if i stop for a few days, it usually picks up again.

A lot of clubs here, don't invest in acoustics at all. The average dancefoor around here, is about 20x20m (60x60feet). And the DJ really cops the noise.

Hence, the sound in many clubs is not only shit, the DJ is right next to the dancefloor, and also most of them slam the faders right up, and i can see the mixer red-lining. AND most of these guys don't know anything about no earplugs. I find there's also a culture of ego and manliness here with loud music. It's fucking stupid.

Can you imagine operating in an environment like that, with NO investment in acoustics? THe sound just rings and blares in your ears, and u can barely make out the vocals.

I dunno how they can do it. Just listening to headphones really loud is getting me worried, let alone doing that shit without any earplugs. A lot of people are telling me to do something about my hearing.
