If you get a 99 or later (may vary in some models) VW with a radio that supports a cd changer (I believe most do), then I recommend a Phatnoise. Its a Linux computer that plugs in like a cd changer and works as an mp3 player. It comes with a 20GB cartrdige which travells to your computer, where you load the songs via USB then to your car where it plugs into the box. It works like a cd changer with infinite* discs. If 20gb isnt enough for you, you can buy cartridges up to 120GB.
(* - infinite may not refelct numbers greater than 1337)
Downsides of this product -
1. The radio face does not display artist/track, etc information. Im not sure if adding a third party head unit would change that or not.
2. There is an annoying text to speech voice that cannot be disabled and attempts to tell you the name of every "disc" you are on. I knew it was in trouble when it couldn't handle 'Gorillaz - Demon Days', but its garbling of 'Wighnomy Borthers and Robag Whrume - Remikks Potpurri' was attrocious.
In all, this box cost me $150 dollars and was basically plug and play installation with the accompnaying $10 mounting kit. Thats about the price I had planned to spend on a head unit for this car, so it seemed justified and I now have 20GB of music wherever i go.
On topic, I really would like to get an A*=8 for my next car, but Id settle for an a6..
