You can do “order of magnitude” calculations. When they say they "don't know what is going to happen" they are referring to the details. I like to compare this to when they developed the atomic bomb. During the early stages of development a number of very bright physicists were worried that the A-bomb would release enough energy to initiate a fusion reaction in the atmosphere. Later, someone (I believe it was Fermi but I would have to look it up) did a few calculations and concluded that the energy would be far less. Although he couldn't pin point the amount of energy he knew it wasn't going to destroy the earth.
And now that I have just compared CERN to one of the first atomic bombs they’re probably going to kick me out of the physics clubs. Anyway, now I am off to a conference talk.
