you can open only one instance of the virus (but it's 16 part multitimbral -> read the manual)

and for the export; you need to use realtime export, it doesn't work with offline bouncing..

wow, what a brilliant post! Nothing like an expert chiming in I think this guy will have his problem solved in no time at all.

Gawd! I hate jackasses and tools who think they know everything but in reality know nothing, therefore have nothing meaningful to contribute, so they say "RTFM". pft

Here's something to try, as far as volume goes:

Aside from main volume, there's also an individual volume of patch. This would be controlled from "edit" menu for the patch - just look for ... "volume" menu item. Sometimes patch is saved at "90" but 127 is max. So, by changing the volume to "max" your patch will be louder.

Also, if you have a slow down on VSTi and also have an external sound card (outside of using virus as interface), try using virus as just an instrument, without USB. Connect your virus directly via Audio lines to your HD recording interface, this way you will be mixing in one place. You will lose ability to control your virus from computer but given state of things (stability, crashes, etc)it may not be a bad thing.

Also, do get the latest virus OS regardless of how it is connected - this is critical.

Furthermore, I'd recommend M-Audio converters over virus because they are slightly better (pro-tools quality in some cases on some models). YMMV.

Keep in mind that unlike firewire, USB is CPU-intensive. Any audio you're pushing over USB taxes your CPU. Your computer also needs to be optimized for sound recording. Try searching sos website for some suggestions. Search for XP and optimization terms. So, once you send audio feeds from virus directly into your HD interface, bypassing USB - you should be at least able to tell where your problem is.

So, if you try all these things and it still comes in "low", try checking how your VU meters are set up - they could be showing -6dB or -4db 0dB and so on. the key is that you want to mix volume in one place, not all of them. Sadly, with some of the VA synths, you have no choice but to mess around with individual patch volume, but such is life.

Once you set your virus to max volume, set your patch to max volume, mix everything else in your soft/hard mixer and leave your synth volume controls alone (unless absolutely necessary).

Hope this helps.
