I was having the same debate with myself a few months ago...Insurance, maintenance, gas.

But no matter what, the freedom of having a car is incomparable. When you take the TTC/Transit system you're running on someone else's schedule - thus (for the most part) incresing all your travel times.

For me (in Richmond Hill), I could never just "pop over to the mall" or "run over to Blockbuster to grab a movie". Those trips would take upwards of half an hour by the time I walk to the bus stop, pay fare, and take the 3 stops there. Not to mention the fact of needing change/bus passes. If I were to drive, AND follow the speed limits it would literally take me 5.6 minutes - shoe tying and snow/ice scraping in the winter included.

Then there's the weekend plans...There would be no jaunts to the cottage, no impromptu missions to Kitchener/Waterloo/Windsor/Niagara Falls/whatever for djs, different venues, or random shenanigins.

For me its not worth not having a car, regardless of the high prices. I figure I'll be one of the few that has this viewpoint - but fuck I LOVE having a car, beater or not.

Ditto. I'm so sick and tired of having to take and pay for two separate bus systems. My commuting time is cut in half by the car, and I don't have to share it with weirdos. All the years the TTC has served me, I won't shed a single tear to wave it goodbye.

BTW, what kind of car are you trying to sell?

Jeff take it from me, miss publc transit.
I live in thornhill, don't have my license, commute to and from work (downtown), commute on the weekends (downtown most of time). It takes me any where from 30 min to an hour to get anywhere I want to go, and I LOVE IT. Public transit has always got me where I want to go.

Seeing as I have never had my license or driven a car for that matter, I really couldn't tell you what is better in the long run. But it would cost you less, it prolly wouldn't be that much of a hassel, and you would be living closer to all of us

One suggestion though, if you jump over to public transit then buy yourself an MP3 player.

When it comes to the stress of always driving, I've been through it all...I put an average of 50000km's on my cars a year and even when I do move to the city I'll still have one. If you can afford to keep than do it, theres nothing worse than wanting to be able to go somehwere and are tied down to a transit system.

Something tells me a guy like Jeff already has one

Personally I can think of many things worse than wanting to go somewhere and being tied down by transit because there's always a way around.

Get a CAB

There are a lot of cab journeys you can make for $1000 a month.... :P

Cabs cost an arm and a leg...

Public Transit is so much better cost wise.

For local trips (ie grocery, etc) get a bike. If you're buying groceries, get a backpack to carry stuff.

If it's costing you 1000+/month that is how much appox. A TTC monthly passes would be for a year, AND you can save the reciept for tax time!!
