Steven Harpers stomach must churn everytime he relives that moment.

Great speculative effort by Xabi Alonso and coincidently that's the second time he's scored from 50+ yards. Liverpool desperately needed that win if they are to have any title aspirations this season.

they were gonna win that match the way they played for 77 minutes but nonetheless, this shows one more time why xabi alonso has one of the best eyes in soccer today! his vision is terrific, if you watch the reds play, the things he does on the field sometimes, the passes he makes, the plays he creates out of nothing, he's truly one of the most underrated players in the game. after gerard, he's their next most valuable player.

Liverpool is my squad even though they're shitting the bed in the early going. They have tons of depth and a lot of experience in their lineup. They should in a perfect world be dominating the premiership. That was definately an amazing goal. Alonso made it look effortless.

Ya but that was against Luton Town, so it's not as impressive as this one.

Alot of people have seen Beckham's similar effort against Wimbledon, but there was also a time Georghe Hagi did it for Barcelona on a very foggy pitch that isn't replayed as much..

Back to that game, tho..It was nice to see Dirk Kuyt finally score his first Liverpool goal...He's been bustin' his ass for the club since his first game, so he was definitely due one.

I dunno if he's underrated, but you're right in saying that on his day, he's a superb player. I feel Gerrard should be partnering him in the center of the park, but Rafa preferes Sissoko who for my money shows more grit then actual creativity. Liverpool played well for the win, but they still look an unbalanced side. There's a major problem with that team when Gerrad isn't playing down the middle. Yes, he can play on the wing...but he's not as effective when he has to come inside to look for scoring opportunities.

I'm a little disappointed that Mark Gonzalez and Pennant aren't being deployed more often as out and out wingers. That would open up pools attacking options and leave the centre for Gerrard and his attacking runs.

I remember that Hagi goal...that was fucking brillant, because you sensed he was aware of the conditions and decided to take a shot by lobbing the unsuspecting goalkeeper. The Carpathian Maradona...isn't that what they used to call Hagi ? In his prime, he was definately up there as one of the worlds best.

I'm glad Kuyt finally banged in his first as well...he's an ugly ******, but I love the hustle he shows on the pitch. The man eptiomizes commitment and hustle. Hopefully now that the first one is in the books he'll score the goals that liverpool need to climb up the table. On paper, the partnership of Kuyt-Bellamy-Crouch should be able to provide the goals liverpool desperately lacked last year.

It was a speculative effort, which is different from pure luck...pure luck woulda been if he was aiming for the sidelines and somehow it pinballed off two players and went in. Alanso saw Harper off the line and attempted the shot. It shows his awareness and excellent control he possesses on the ball.

Harper was unlucky he fell...but that shouldn't diminish the value of Xabi's effort.

Goalie got unlucky and thats why Xabi scored.

Its like Xabi was shooting at an empty net since goalie didnt even touch the ball.

f'sure..one of the main reasons anyone would even attempt a shot like that is because you hope to catch the kepper off guard...and he did exactly that.

well said...my cousin's a die-hard Feyenoord supporter, and I think he was ready to slit his wrists when Kuyt was sold :P...In Holland that's what epitomizes the difference between Feyenoord and Ajax players: Feyenoord = "hustle and grit"; Ajax = "style and finesse"
