I happen to love progressive trance so taste is not issue. On another note this mix is not progressive to begin with. It's more of an uplifting set. Here's a random collection of samples (mostly trance) that define progressive:

There isn't a definitive style of progressive music which defines the word, you just know it when you hear it.

To get an idea of what progressive would sound like for house music, click on my sig. Again that's just one type of representation. Styles vary, but the meaning is the same.

There is no one solid sound for progressive trance, although here are some specifications, as opposed to uplifting trance.

--Progressive trance is very open to using new sounds (so it evolves pretty fast sonically), whereas uplifting trance is not; however, uplifting trance is more open to using a lot of various musical theory, where progressive trance won't bother with that in fear of becoming cheesey.

-- progressive trance is usually composed in an aolean (minor) scale or dorian scale. (uplifting trance is ALWAYS composed in an aolean scale)

-- most progressive trance tracks have the chord progression : "vi IV" (like lost tribe - game master) or "IV vi" (reversed) (like sasha - xpander).... typical chord progressions for uplifting trance tracks are those that are commonly found in pop rock music.

-- progressive trance uses arpeggiators for leads quite often (although not always)..

uplifting trance leads are more free floating and jingle-based and will never use a straight arpeggiator for a lead. trance that sounds more uplifting and does use arpeggiators for leads a lot is anthem trance (ie. your old Ferry Corsten stuff).

-- progressive trance likes to incorperate elements of other electronic music genres (i.e. basslines from nuskool breaks.. or drums from house.. ect ect).. uplifting trance is more interested in incorperating elements from non EDM styles with trance (ie. pop, rock, trip hop, and classical).

-- mostly always uses saw plucks for basslines. (so does uplifting trance)

-- progressive trance harmonies are composed in 3rds (a la E-Craig) and/or 5ths (a la Sasha - Xpander). (uplifting trance harmonies can do this too, but have more of a harmonic range.. some anjunabeats releases use 11ths and even 13ths in their harmonies).. progressive trance afficionadoes prefer not to toy with complex harmonies in their tunes in fear of being labeled "cheesey".

-- progressive trance can be uplifting at times, but that is not its main purpose..)

-- progressive trance is less predictable with buildups and breakdowns. and buildups and breakdowns are not the main purpose of the track (unlike anthem trance). not that uplifting trance is always predictable, but progressive trance arrangements are often more original from track to track, but do use the buildup breakdown formula. Some of the more commercial uplifting trance tracks are structured based on the verse/chorus/verse/chorus2x/bridge/chorus2x formula.

--progressive trance strives on never sounding commercial. uplifting trance producers try to satisfy both the commercial media and the underground.
