It isn't true. Of course if you use all presets it's going to be like that. Reason doesn't colour the sound your track if you don't want it to.
With ease of use comes the risk of things sounding the similiar, that is not the softwares fault but your own. You're not forced to use presets or samples included. Don't just use the synths as they are, layer them in the Combinator with different effects. Consider using sampled synths/waveforms for your sounds.

I know Reason isn't perfect, it's limited in some ways. But if you don't even try to overcome limitations and expect everything to be served on a silver platter then don't be surprised it sounds "made with reason".

Sorry if i wasn't clear sir, but i do use my own samples and whatnot, not the default reason ones. But then, i can't call myself much of an audio engineering junkie, i'm very much and 100% noob on that part. But you said it yourself, "Reason doesn't colour the sound your track if you don't want it to." the fact is very clear here that it does shape your sound if you don't do anything about it, so you are not in 100% control of the program. Not sure how this works on other programs, might be the same thing, either way it shouldn't happen unless you want it to.

yea that good old reason sound...

i tweak out everything with reverbs, Scream and compressors...

the new mastering suite in 3.0 is the shit

i also love to twist things back and forth with the vocoder, which also works nice on vocals... so yea reason will make you an 'audio engineer' if you aren't already one.

i used it as rewire up until 3 weeks ago but decided that battery has much more possibilities than the redrum although i really enjoyed the program.

the most recent thing was hooking subtractor with a crazy ass patch into the redrum and having the drum bits completely tweaked out without doing nothing more than twisting a knob.. Now that's the shit!

I've had reason for about a year and i love it. i use it to make electo house. just download lots of refills and make some massive combinator patches used to have FL but i didn't like it very much... Use cubase SX too so i can use other vsts and hardware synths.. (Good reason refill 'power of pulse')

I've used Reason from version 1.0 to v.3.0 untill like 3-4 weeks ago. Been having some detours from it to both cubase and live during that time but I've always come back. As some of you know I've also been a defender of it here on the forums

But I've actually moved away from Reason to Cubase once and for all now, got the drummachine RM4 to work just as I wanted so now nothing's holding me back any more in cubase
But in the end it's really not so much about the tools used, I think it was more because I needed something fresh in my producing to keep evolving.

Reason is a great tool, it rocks for beginners since it's not as heavy as cubase to learn, the capability to route basicly anything anywhere is awesome and really opens up a new way of engineering sounds compared to cubase at least.
A downside is that the synths and standard sounds lack a bit in quality compared to vst's like Atmosphere, Albino 2 & impOSCar.
But they are not bad, they are just not as good as some other instruments.
I still love the subtractor for things like basslines and cold, raw, evil, wicked synths

I hear people saying that Reason is limited in some ways, and I agree. However, I just want to say that limitations are very good for your creativity! As one of my friends said, switching to Cubase and VSTis will 90% of the time get you stuck in the “warez and preset-jungle”, which will kill your creativity.

Well, even though I use Cubase myself, I think he made a valid point!

Yes and no...

I've stuck in the preset jungle in reason too, what helped me get out of that was the fact that I learned how to do some basic programming of synths.
Nowdays I usually create my patches from scratch instead of browsing presets after presets

It's kind of ironic, I always found reason really hard to use when I tried so I gave up pretty soon! I found live to be heaps easier and even pro tools was an improvement once I mastered the quirks! I'm now using live while I try and save for sonar...

As to whether a host can influence the sound of your tracks, I beieve it can... The workflow for different programs is different and will steer your sound a particular way I feel. The way it handles midi, arrangement, audio etc will affect the way you deal with these elements and whether you approach your music in an experimental way for example or a more written then performed way. Or like improvised or fixed from the start. Just my $0.2
