I am capping my adsl at 5k though, hehe. So cant download faster than 5k.

But i think 60k is fast enough. Ofcoarse that is the home adsl, with a connection speed of 500k. The business ones go up to 2mb connection speed. So work out the download speed, sommit about 240k

Cant afford that though

Which Broadband user you joining mate ? Oh and I got webspace with bt somewhere but I can't figure out how to access it.... would they close down any files that are being downloaded if we zipped them up, or cos it comes with our connection in the price, would be be ok linking tunes to download ? I just started a small site with my mate offering 5 downloads a week but if I could sort my BT out and it didn't cut off for using it for downloads, I could add more to it

Ok, well you could donate the space to me, but this is what you do

Ok, the address for your webspace is www.btinternet.con/~username

u need to put the ~ in

mine is www.btinternet.com/~sheila.deeley/

your login details are

ftp.btinternet.com

username: your username (mine is [email protected]
Password: well what ever it is

That should work, if you have any probs just let me know

But you can host mp3s on the site, and it is fast, just zip them, and it is fine to link to them

Enjoy

Oh and i am getting adsl, prob with bt, but if they r opening it up, not sure what isp it will be with

or

Follow the instructions below to upload your page to the BTinternet server.

Start up your FTP program.

Log on using the following information:
The HOST NAME is: ftp.btinternet.com
The HOST TYPE (if needed) is:UNIX (standard)
The USER ID is: youremailname(in lower case)
The PASSWORD is your: e-mailbox password.
Remember that it is case sensitive.

Transfer your home page files from your computer to the server.

If you do not know how to do this, look at the Help section of the FTP program you are using.

Type in your URL into a Web browser to test that your home page is working.

In our example, this would be: http://www.btinternet.com/~smith.family or http://www.smith.family.btinternet.co.uk (see Virtual Domains).

If your Web browser cannot find the page, check the URL carefully.
Remember that URLs - like passwords - are case sensitive, so smith.family is not the same as Smith.Family. Note also that spaces are not valid characters in a URL.
The ~ character is called a tilde, and is above the # (hash) key on a PC keyboard.

I have used BT ADSL and hosted my own FTP server before. It is a bit of a pain in the neck having your IP address assigned dynamically. Although you are "permenantly connected" that is not strictly true. If you switch the PC off then the connection drops and a new IP address is assigned next time you connect. You can always leave your PC turned on permanently, but in practice, the ADSL connection drops every now and then (like once a day at least). It might be worth asking your ADSL provider if they'll give you a static address...the worst they can say is no.

If you hadn't already planned, you MUST install some firewall software when you get a broadband connection. If you don't you are almost guaranteed to get hacked fairly frequently - especially if you're running an FTP server...

I used http://www.networkice.com/products/...e_defender.html which has always been well reviewed.

Also, I would get a hold of Windows 2000 or Windows XP as 95/98/Me are hopelessly riddled with security holes which even with a firewall are still major problems.

If you are prepared to pay for ADSL, you might want to just buy some webspace - www.uk2.net will give you about 500MB for £70 odd a year. There may be others that are cheaper. It saves a lot of hassle and you can get your own domain name thrown in for free (I see that www.flystyler.com) is still available!)
