Well, I think DSOTM was the album that was pioneer in a sense that it ushered in the era of "electronic" rock. The synthesizer use on the album was sublime and for the first time the synths were featured front and center of the composition. They took on the lead, backing, FX, and just about every other niche within the audio field of the song.
The album is complex and takes few listens to understand the meaning. I hate to be a snob but in order to experience the full awesomeness of the album, you have to experience it live. I was priviledged to have witnessed it live, alas performed by Roger Waters - not the actual original band but even then, I could feel the music. Mind you, I was disguistingly sober and considering the psychodelic nature of the PF music, I may have missed a dimension that was originally intended, yet it was terrific nonetheless.
For some trippy shit related to the DSOTM album (along with some others), check out this website:

Pink Floyd were probably original pioneers of "trance rock". There are not that many bands that can be safely called that but I wouldn't call them by any other classification. Pink Floyd is not just rock - it is an experience in every song. If there were aliens sent to our planet to bring beauty and sound together, Pink Floyd would most certainly be on the very top of my "list of suspects".
Enjoy it and let your mind absorb it and envelope you, it will certainly open your inner eye to something other-dimensional.
