While I commented before about the corporations cutting prices to ensure their business friendly government stays in power, there was an article on CNN/Money today about hedge funds and other large banking institutions purchased tons of futures in anticipation of a bad hurricane season yet again this year. This caused the prices to shoot up and when a repeat failed to happen, now they're dumping it

And this is how the corporate world protects itself in election years.
If you just look at poll numbers, this issue alone has caused increased confidence in the current administration and Congress. It's kind of sad how the American people use this as a more important political barometer than so many other issues.
It's amazing how people notice this, yet don't notice how the Republicans with their corporate tax breaks and subsidies increase their tax responsibility more than they're saving in gas. |
I totally agree with you, but how would you tell those who say that it is impossible for the president to have his finger on the gas button argument?

He doesn't need his finger on the button. Corporate America knows they are better off with the Republicans in office, because the Democrats will tax them more and cut into their profits (though both parties are pretty sold to big business through our lobbying system).
That said, I think a lot of the reason people think it's always election year politics is because of the time of year when the elections fall. Even in non-election years, as long as there wasn't a hurricane that fueled a price surge, gas is down this time of year. People just don't drive as much as in the summer, so demand is down, and the need for heating oil hasn't started yet.
