They Ortofons are expensive, but they are from Denmark, and I think they look smoother than the Stantons. Their initial cost is a lot ($80-$200 depending on model), but the replacement needles are only $30.
American DJ makes a pretty cool needle called the Banana, which has a similar sleek appearance the Ortofon's have.

forget appearance.. the ortofons have sound quality and tracking ability that is unsurpassed.

i had my ortofons in 1.5 to 1.75 grams for a while.. then i got a few records that had spindle holes too large, so when i qued up the record by hand the needle would jump.. so i put the needles up to 2.25 which is still a small ammount, and they won't jump w/o me hitting them.

no other needle can do that

No, i dont have the American DJ Banana, I use the ortofon concorde silver. (shown below) It's $99US and $30 for the replacement needle. I've never had a problem with them, they look nice, sound great and perform well.

Both cost the same. I do not have any experience with the American DJ needle

yea... u just nead to replace the stylus which is the acctual needle that goes into the cartridge. ortofons and trackmasters dont require headshells b/c they are all integrated. but if you want to get some cheap ass cartridges... then you need to mount it on to your headshell....

i use the shure m35s's, depending what you're using the needles for, and i'll assume trance since this is a trance board, the shures can be damn good sound reproduction. i didn't think ortofon's were worth the extra $75 or whatever to the cost of the shure's, at least for what i'm using them for.

Well, if i think i notice some kind of sound degredation with my stylus i just bust out a new one and compare it with the old one using the same record. this usually does the trick if you cant remember when the last time you changed styli was.(like me )
