as opposed to private gun ownership as i am, in the end its "private" gun ownership, so its a very tough, almost impossible issue... however, i would, if i were you, give statistics as to how many deaths and violent acts are committed each year by kids with guns in their homes, willingly or by accident, plus give some specific examples to captivate the listeners into the more "dramatic" image of a 4 year old shooting another 4 year old or something....
when that is said and done, reach a sensible agreement with the crowd that gun ownership in this country will never be banned, but propose solutions to restrict as much as possible, some possibly:
a) ban on guns in the home.... propose that guns be kept in a public guarded safe-house for all members of a particular "zone", so to speak, that can be entered with password/fingerprint/etc.... when its hunting season, go to the "storage-center-like" safe-house and get your gun and have fun... and return when done... there should be a 12-hour limit that it can be out of the safe-house without "touching base" or signing it back in, otherwise you get a fine (the fines will help pay for this program)
b) not only should buying a gun not be so easy, but actually owning it should be too... require a safe to be bought upon gun purchase (at a cheap price, since its for the better of our society, no?) if the whole public "safe-house" idea doesnt work... it shouldnt be a matter of having a key to open it up, kids can do that.... there should be a number-lock as well as whatever other ways to make it child-tamper-proof
hope this helps a little
