Here's my story:
I used to be big into the clubbing scene but moving to the US has provided nothing but hardship in finding one, especially in upstate New York. Yeah crobar's nice but completely out of the way and expensive and not the same as the clubs I was used to in Europe and Mexico.
So anyways, I go to university here in the US and I became a DJ to supplement my thirst for a decent Trance scene. After a while friends started pressuring me to play out since apparently I was good enough and after a while I started playing house parties, campus events and miscellaneous low-paying but fun gigs just to get exposure. Well one of my old buddies that I lived with over the summer (we used to talk about opening a club together sometime) became the promoter of this club called Euphoria (brand new place no one really new what it was, etc). He ended up getting a new job in Chicago so he's leaving but he literally gave his job to another friend of mine that I had known for about a year, Justin. I actually happened to turn Justin on to trance and he loved it ever since. So the club owner was asking what kind of DJ's he knew off that would be interested in a residency and immediately justin called and offered the gig. Basically the big opening night (the 17th) is where all the weight lies. If the 17th sells (which i think it will) then the new image for the club will work and I in turn keep the residency. If no one shows up and the bar doesnt make any money, etc etc then i lose the residency.
summary:
1)you'd be surprised what connections end up actually taking you places...
2)if the bar doesnt make money then you get the boot
