been shoppin for my first setup and had a question or two..dunno if i can afford to pick up all the hardware i want/need at once, so was wonderin what the bare essentials would be..

my list so far:
2 - Pioneer CDJ 200s
1 - Ecler Nuo (2 or 3, is there a big difference?)

i plan on utilizin my laptop down the road, so any advice on a decent soundcard would be good too...and is it absolutely necessary to purchase monitors from the get go? i have some intact speakers from an old stereo i dont use and i dunno if i can afford to purchase them along with everything else..thanks in advance

Massive thanks for the replies lads..

Ok..here's the latest I got to..

First off..I'm deciding now between the cdj200's and the Gemini singles..not sure what their mark is..but they about 200 dollars cheaper each!

I found the pios for 350 dollars each..which brings us to a total of about 800 dollars..cuz of shipment charges and stuff..and IMO..that's a pretty good price for the cdj200.

The only thing the gemini's got over the 200s is the fact that there's a + and - button for the pitch bending together with the jog wheel..while the cdjs have the jog wheel only..picky?? I guess..lol

As for the mixers..I usually play with an American Audio 4 channel mixer..which is pretty decent..I usually use the american audio mixer with Denon dual cd players..but compared to mp3 mixing..the quality isn't that good...

So..as for mixers...if I get the cdjs..I'll go for a cheap mixer...or vice versa..but as for a cheap mixer..american audio or behringer...or vestax??

Thx alot guys..

Cheers

Did you try AGI for the CDJ-200's? I thought you can get them a little cheaper than $350, shipped (maybe not?)

Do NOT buy the Gemini decks. It might seem cheaper now, but when you buy your second pair of CDJ's (when the Gemini's break, or totally suck), then you'll be spending even more money. And I'm pretty sure the Gemini's don't have .02% pitch accuracy (which the CDJ-200's do).

As for not having +/- pitch buttons, I'm not sure why Pioneer doesn't include them on their single decks (their dual does have them). The jog wheel does work just fine, but why not give the option?

The Ecler Nuo-2 looks like a nice, inexpensive mixer that will last you.

What are you planning to do with the laptop? You might want to look into Torq, as for around $250 you get the software (which is quite good), as well as an external soundcard.

What's wrong with Torq? I happen to like it quite a bit, it offers everything SSL does and much more at half the cost:

1. Can re-wire into ableton (SSL can't)
2. Support MIDI control (SSL doesn't)
3. Has effects (SSL doesn't)
4. Supports VST's (SSL doesn't)
5. Has loops (SSL doesn't)
6. The connectiv audio interface works with any audio application, as it's a regular soundcard (SSL's interface only works with Serato).

SSL really only offers the following over Torq:
1. Lower latency
2. Audio interface is built like a tank
3. Long track record of reliability (Torq is still new)

If you're looking for a traditional DJ experience, with proper beatmatching and mixing and decks and such, Torq is the way to go.

Ableton is great, but it's not DJ'ing per se. It's more live production, which is probably not what a beginner should be doing (unless they are brilliantly talented, which most people aren't).

thats exactly the reason im getting torq for! so much cheaper and better than SSL. the only thing im waiting for is im hoping m-audio will add digital ins/outs to the interface to retain a 100% digital setup.

I think that's a violation of Forum rules.

In any case, stay clear of CDJ-100's and the DJM-300. Not that's there's anything wrong with them, they are just quite outdated.

(around this price have to confirm it with my distributor... have many other items near dealer/wholesale prices)

(add around 5$ on each item (for my expenses) ($US)

* this is an estimate...

I don't use CD's so I can't be much helpon the technical side
