Deliberate PS3 Destruction Stuns Gamers
Friday November 17, 2006
We're not sure what sort of psychological motives cause Ben Lovatt to be the self-admitted 'attention-seeker' he is, but one things is certain, he turned more than a few heads, and likely inspired a few queasy cases of nausea among die-hard gamers when he and a passionate cohort took a sledgehammer to a brand new Playstation 3.
While demand for the new game console has inspired violent stampedes, and even a shooting in the U.S., Lovatt thought nothing of smashing one to pieces on Friday. Not even news of skyrocketing bidding wars on sites like Ebay, where consoles were being sold for prices as ridiculous as $50,000, could alter Lovatt's course of action.
And it's not the first time he's set out to destroy a much sought after gadget. He did the same thing to the wildly popular ipod, and the Xbox.
With each new venture of annihilation, he sets up a website.
He chronicles his wasteful misadventures on www.smashourstuff.com, where he also collects donations for future projects.
"Yes, we are getting quite a few (complaints)," he admits, citing several cases of hate mail.
"But we get good response from other people."
One may assume there's a deep philosophical message about the perils of runaway consumerism behind his project, but he doesn't admit to having a specific agenda.
"We don't really say why we do it. We leave it up to interpretation by the consumer."
