drewfactor, yes Northerners party so much harder and so much longer.
I'm not being bias (well I am a bit), but I've been South, many times.
If you like your beer, you've got to try out the nightlife in Newcastle, about 1-2 hours drive from Leeds.
The nightlife here is shit hot. We were voted 6th most partying city in the WORLD by a US travelling agency, and best UK city for nightlife by a UK travelling magazine.
People up here live for one thing; partying. Newcastle consumes twice the national average of alcohol and has the cheapest prices in Britain for beer. A couple of nightclubs do an all-you-can-drink night, at the Playrooms on Wednesdays they have bottles of beer for 10p, and pints at the boat for 20p.
British pints are bigger than American pints, quite a bit bigger. I'm not sure what Canada have, but most places have smaller pints. A pint isn't a pint wherever you go, you see some places measure it differently. Don't worry, we have big pints here
A word of warning though. Don't mention unemployment, poverty, or any of that stuff around here - ever. I mean it. If you do some guy who's just been made redundant will probably kill you. Newcastle is regarded by most in the UK as a very violent place. In many respects it is, but I always say it's only if you push your luck. If you look for a fight you won't have to look hard.
Still, Newcastle is worth checking out. We have the bigg market and the quayside, streets and streets of nothing but pubs, clubs, and people completely off their head on a friday/saturday night.
The only quarrel I have with Newcastle is that the clubs aren't open very late, and there isn't much trance, but that will hopefully change soon, and the people here party harder than anywhere else anyway.
Another word of warning: London is full of wankers. Also, most people there don't speak English very well, both inside and outside the city centre.
And lastly, avoid ALL people from Sunderland. They are EVIL. EVIL!

Yeah most the lagers here are shit.
Although you can get Kronenbourg in just about every pub in the country, and that's alright. Problem is, everywhere stocks shit like Carling and Fosters as well.
At the end of the day, it all gets you pissed though
All over the coutryside (or even just suburban towns) you can get real ales made in local breweries.
Basically, wander into any traditional pub and they'll stock several beers you've never heard of before.
And then there's Newcastle Broon Ale. What can I say?
The Guinness in Ireland is the best in the world (obviously), it is mandatory for all pubs in Ireland to have a £15,000 cooling system specially for their Guinness! Now THAT'S service. In comparison, apparently ours isn't as good, but outside Ireland, England probably has the best Guinness in the world, simply because less of the "Irishness" leaves it on the way
You should have a good time in Leeds, I've heard they have good nightlife. I've only been to Leeds once, the people have annoying accents, but everyone in the UK probably sounds the same over the pond (most yanks sound the same to me).
Watch out for mackems - people from hell (sunderland), as they have a whiny whingy North Eastern accent. A poor immitation of the geordie accent, which is just the best
