They recommended it as an option of last resort for smokers who have so little will power they can't quit.
I think the problem with tobacco is that it is carcinogenic, nicotine creates an addicitiveness to it which will mean you smoke more, however the medium in which the smoke is distributed in my opinion won't effect n the health that much.
There might be some health benifits to not inhaling tobacco (i.e. cigars) simply because you would limit yourself to mostly mouth caner and not lung caner, but there might still be the same effects on heart diseases.
Only advantage I could see in a water pipe vs. cigarette is that you are not inhaling the wrapper. Then again, you are inhaling parts of coal. |
contrary to whaty ou seem to believe, cigarettes have a lot more in their compounds than just tobacco.
| quote: | | A cigarette is a product manufactured from cured and cut tobacco leaves, which are rolled and/or stuffed into a paper-wrapped cylinder (generally less than 120 mm in length and 10 mm in diameter). The cigarette is lit, usually with a match or lighter at one end and allowed to burn for the purpose of inhalation of its smoke from the other (sometimes filtered) end, which is inserted in the mouth. Cigarettes are smoked by some with a cigarette holder. (See also Bidi). A cigarette contains over 4000 chemicals, over 60 of which increase the risk of cancer and other diseases in humans and animals. |

this is not the case for waterpipe tobacco, which has somewhere in the region of 10 ingrediants, and probably less.

with waterpipes, you have to take into account the molasses, the flavouring substances, and the charcoals effects on the compound (and sometimes, the effects of a 'quick-lighting charcoal'{which includes chemicals not existing in a standard charcoal] on the compound instead).
|
Yes.
Also there are just as many harmless airborne compounds as harmful ones; they won't all vaporize the same way either, and not all will make it to your lungs. As for charcoal, it's one of the best filters we have at our disposal, so it would most likely be more useful than harmful. Though, when I use my hookah, I put a piece of aluminum over the tobacco to act as an oven, then poke a few holes, then i place two hot coals on top and let it do its thing... none of those solids will reach your lungs, and since it's on top of the tobacco, the smoke from the coals rises off while keeping the smoke from the tobacco in the chamber.
So, yeah, what is the difference between inhaling a perfume that your girlfriend is wearing, and smoking a flavoring in a hookah?
There are tons of things present at all times being absorbed by your lungs; the problem with nicotine (besides all the carcinogens, some of which can't even be created in a lab!) is that it coats the walls of your lungs with crap, causing pulmonary problems and vascular chaos in general, requiring more oxygen to be inhaled. You can use a filter to kill most of this.
The most important question of all:
Why would anyone smoke tobacco when you can smoke some weed?

yeah, i forgot to mention that, i use it the same way (except for the two charcoals part, i use only one).

After a couple of years of doing that, I couldn't do jack shit during work outs (Kung Fu, mostly Wu Shu though). Before I started smoking, I could do 25-30 vertical pushups without breaking a sweat (I started when I was 18). Now I can barely do 5, and I quit a while ago (although I do enjoy the occasional blunt/bong rip/vapourizer hit). But I also haven't been regularly working out for the past couple of years, so that factors in too. But smoking a shit load did fuck up my stamina and lung capacity, and I went down from 25-30 to 5. |
I'm going to have to disagree with you slightly on this one. Pot smoking is widely prevelent in the NBA, and I have played on two high level hockey teams where some of the best conditioned players smoked a ton of weed. I honestly think if you train well your body can take a lot of beating.

But are you sure that these compounds are only in cigarettes? My understanding of the carcinogens that make smoking dangerous is that they are present in any processed tobacco, not merely the tobacco found in cigarettes. Also, I don't think that smoking highly filtered tobacco is any more healthy, in a cancer-risk sense, than smoking less filtered tobacco. The cancer-risk has more to do with the frequency of exposure to carcinogens rather than the quantity - or, at least, that's what the anti-cancer people in Australia have told me.
I'll point out that I'm a cigarette smoker, for what it's worth. And yes, I'm an idiot.

Heh, tell me about it; exactly what I think of my habit too. I love how irrational us humans are.
