First of all, Excite, you're completely right.
Like you, I've also noticed that a lot of Epic Trance is recorded at 135-136 bpm, which is a little too slow for me (and many others).

The reason why it's done, I think, is because it's assumed that DJ's will be speeding up their records to the level they want. Now, if a song was recorded at 142, some people would have to slow it down, and most producers realize that slowing down a record is much worse than speeding it up. It just works one way. So producers err on the slow side, and let DJ's make the track as fast as they want.

That's what I think.
Also, you should be able to get a 135 song to spin at 145 on your Technics, it's fairly common. In Tunnel Trance Force 16, DJ Dean speeds up the 135-BPM "R.U.F.F. Cuts" by Axel Konrad to 146 BPM.

Yeah, I knew that, what I meant was why is it to slow. If the song is good i'll get into it, a couple bpm isn't too big a difference.

To me, it just depends on the TRACK I'm listening to. Most of Ferry Corsten's live mix on 2000/04/29 (you'll never stop hearing about this from me) wouldn't sound good if the speed/pitch were slowed down by 5% to the speed/pitch that the tracks were originally recorded. I DL'd some of those tracks that were played seperate and I didn't like the sound I got so, I sped all of them up by 5% and it matches what I originally heard. Sometimes, you have to do this to save space for a CD. Technique - Sun is Shinning didn't sound right to me in Tiesto @ ? (It was track 6) because it was sped up by 5%. I'm used to hearing that track at it's original speed/pitch. So, the bottom line is, on some tracks speed it up can sound better and other times, it just doesn't sound good (to me)...

It's not so much the speed of the song but the key that it is in. Changing the pitch either up or down messes up the key. I guess in your case it's just that you get used to listening to songs one way and when you hear them in a different key it seems strange.

Yeah, just lift the platter up. There's a little screw thing that controls the pitch, just turn it.

What is this guy on about?! If you pitch up a record at 135 bpm by 6%, it will be playing at 143bpm- which will shift up the entire key of the record by 1 semitone and also aound pretty fast. This can really fuck your mixes up unless you know what you're doing. When mixing, records at 135bpm are really handy for changing the tempo and key (and therefore mood) of a set, so I disagree that everything should be recorded at 140bpm.

I think 135's pretty ok.. even for epic. I mean, some tracks are meant to be played slowwer.. like vocal-filled ones.
