I remember back in the 80's the engines of DC-10 aircraft were falling off due to metal fatigue on the main bolts holding the engine to the wing mount.
After they grounded the planes and checked them all they found a number of them with cracked bolts just waiting to let go.

Well Tacoma was due to resonance. ie frequency matching.

and it went down since the brdige wasnt designed to withstand torsional forces.

I dont think this is a good topic since it wasnt necessarily due to material failing but due to the way it was built.

what about the titanic?
wasnt a majority of the leakage caused by not only the striking of the iceberg but because the metals used on the titanic were not strong and amoungst cold waters became even more brital?
